Wednesday 5/5, 10-12 Climate change and Migration (Lecture: Andreas Listegård)

This lecture will discuss the heated issue of so-called 'climate refugees'. Among scholars and policy-makers, migration related to climate change is seen as a major challenge for states in the future. There are already many signs of the effects of climate change on people's livelihoods in many parts of the world, not the least in the Global South. How do states tackle these challenges within international institutions such as the UN and the EU? Can migration be seen as a form of adaptation to climate change? What are the possible roots (or drivers) of climate-related migration? These questions will be discussed in this combined lecture and seminar, with empirical examples from Kiribati and Ethiopia.

This session will be divided into two parts. Part one, 10.15-11.00, will be a live lecture on Zoom and part two, 11.15-12.00, a seminar. During part two we will form smaller groups in the Zoom-function 'Breakout rooms' and discuss the following questions:

¤ Is migration a viable form of adaptation or a capitulation to the forces of climate change and global inequality?

¤ What are the prospects for managing climate-related migration within international institutions?

¤ How can we understand the inteconnection between climate change and other (economic, social/cultural, political) drivers of migration?
