HE 2233: Adaptation to Global Environmental Change Spring term 2021

This is the general structure of the course adapted to online teaching and learning

The course consists of lectures and seminars of two kinds: literature seminars and individual project seminars as well as a workshop. The seminars and the workshop are mandatory. The course is structured according to modules, with each week being one module, all the information on that weeks activities will be found in the module. Below is the presentation of the main forms for learning in the course.

Lectures

The lectures introduce you to the topics and themes covered by the course. Lectures will be of two kinds: live or prerecorded. Live lectures are given via Zoom at the date and time showed in the schedule and in Modules. Prerecorded lectures are uploaded in Modules and are discussed via Zoom at the date and time showed in the schedule and in Modules. You find the Zoom-link for all lectures and discussions in Modules. For each lecture there are texts that you are requested to read in order to be able to get as much as possible out of the lecture. You find reading instructions for all lectures in Modules.

Literature seminars

The logic behind literature seminars are that they focus on specific texts and topics and/or themes and are mandatory. Students come prepared to every literature seminar in accordance with what is outlined in the module. Some seminars are followed up by a short assignment – 1-2 pages – where the student, with the use of the relevant literature, presents a reflection on the issues dealt with. Reading instructions for each seminar are provided.

Individual Project

During the course, each student will work with an individual project with the aim to analyse the present climate risks, vulnerability, and adaptive capacity of a specific context, based on which strategies to make successful climate adaptation possible can be critically discussed and/or proposed. During the individual project seminars, you are requested to present the state of your individual project, what problems/challenges/questions you are currently facing, and your plans for the continuation of your individual project. You are also requested to actively contribute with input in relation to your co-students’ project presentations.

The workshop

The aim of the workshop is to provide the students with an opportunity to collectively and actively assess risk, vulnerability and adaptive capacity. For this year's course, the workshop will be divided into three sessions during one week and will focus on assessing risk, vulnerability and adaptative capacity in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic. This workshop is mandatory and there is more information in Modules.

Grading

The Home Exam is graded Fail/Pass/Pass with Distinction, according to the criteria given in the instructions for the individual project assignment.

Seminar assignments are graded Fail/Pass.

The course grade is based on the submission of seminar assignments (mandatory) plus the grade given for the individual project assignment.
