Welcome to GVN360 Climate change history, 7,5 hp, vt21

The aim of the course is to deepeng the knowledge of past climate change and variability on different time/space scales, and the mechanisms behind these. We will critically examine the various paleoclimate archives and proxies used to interpret climate beyond the observational records. We will focus on climate variability of the last 2000 years, and discuss how climate has affected past societies. Focus will be on defining the important aspect of what “pre-industrial” climate is, i.e. the baseline from which the anthropogenic influence on climate is estimated. We will discuss short-term climate fluctuations as well as longer periods of climate change, such as the Medieval Climate Anomaly and the Little Ice age. This will allow us to understand how humans and societies have responded to, and coped with, climate change in the past.

A group project will be running throughout the course.  Working in groups of 4-5 students, the aim  is to estimate the timing of distinct human influence on climate, i.e. the transition from pre-industrial to anthropogenic climate, for different regions using high-resolution paleoclimate proxy data. The results will be presented in form of a short written report as well as orally at a seminar.
