This lecture introduces the course through a focus on the history and evolution of global and regional governance. It deals with questions such as, when did global and regional governance begin, and what are the differences between older and newer forms of governance? What is the difference between government and governance, and between governance and international organizations? We also talk about modes of governance (hierarchy, market, and network).

Start reading Barnett, Pevehouse et al. It is the book introduction to a new book with many of the leading scholars in the field. It deals specifically with global governance, and the book is structured around the concepts of hierarchy, network and market.

Turn next to Weiss and Wilkinson, which is the introduction to one of the best-sellers in the field. It deals specifically with the link between global governance and international organizations.

Finally, read Söderbaum, taking into account that this book is about regionalism and regional governance. It deals therefore with global governance from regional perspectives.
