How do we ‘belong’ to the nation state and is nationalism a good thing?

This lecture addresses the question of why national identities and nationalist movements remain so influential in shaping popular politics. We will begin by considering a range of explanations for the emergence and development of nationalisms and their universal appeal. Subsequently we will explore the variety of national identities and movement that are generated in different social and historical contexts. We will examine the connections between nationalism and modernity and the ways in which national identities were fostered by emerging European governments. Do nationalisms vary across time and space? How is belongingness forged through nationalism? Is nationalism always a good thing or should we be cautious of the politics around it ? How are Global South nationalisms different from Global North? We will look at case studies to address these questions and more.
