This lecture starts off with a discussion on what is Indigenous People's rights, followed by case studies on conflicts over land in Sápmi, the geographical area stretching over northern Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia, inhabited by the Sami people since time immemorial.

The case studies will serve to illustrate and problematise contemporary land conflicts in the traditional areas inhabited by Indigenous peoples. Increasingly we see a framing of these conflicts as a dichotomy between Indigenous People's rights on the one hand and green energy production and mineral extraction in order to facilitate the green transition needed to combat climate change and environmental issues on the other.
