There are various tools out there that can help you with your studies, and all of them have appropriate and inappropriate uses. For example:

Wikipedia can be great to get some initial ideas. But it's usually a terrible reference (you should always go find the original sources) and copying and pasting from wikipedia is cheating.
Google is very useful, but if you only search using Google you are going to get lost. You need to learn to use proper academic databases and to analytically scan for relevant material.
Speaking to other students about course content and assignments is a very good idea. Copying from another student, or asking someone else to write your assignment for you is cheating.

In this course we want you to think about ChatGPT in a similar way (We're using ChatGPT here to refer to that tool and similar AI language tools). There are appropriate and inappropriate uses.

Below we set out a general ethical point, which we hope doesn't sound too grumpy, but it's very very important. We also provide some notes on inappropriate uses, appropriate uses and some rules to follow of you do choose use such tools in this course.

Ethics

The choice to cheat or not is yours. It's your education, your future career. You decide what kind of student you want to be.

With the notes below you cannot claim you did not know what was and was not permitted on this course.

Important: If you find that you are stressed and considering using AI tools to shortcut assignments, please reach out to student counsellors who can help you to manage your studies.

Inappropriate uses (cheating):

Using ChatGPT to write all or part of your assignment for you. This is referred to as using a 'prohibited aid' and can result in disciplinary action.
- Example of cheating prompts:
  - Write a 1500 word essay on global health governance
  - Summarise the main findings of X article/s. (Summarising text and findings is a key skill you need to learn, and summarising main ideas is how you can learn a given topic or field)

Using Chat GPT to do your research.
- ChatGPT is very bad with facts, concepts and references. It makes stuff up (it 'hallucinates'). If you do not do the research yourself you won't know if it's correct or not. Your lecturer will, though.
- Example of problematic research prompts:
  - List the five of the most important academic articles on global health governance. (If you did not know this topic how would you know if what was listed was right?)

The only time you should ever find yourself copying and pasting from ChatGPT is if you first entered your own text and were using it to check language or structure. See further below.

Appropriate uses and rules if you do choose to use ChatGPT

Translation: You may enter your own text into Chat GPT for translation if you struggle with English and prefer to draft in your first language. You may also use it to translate other text (e.g. a quote from an academic or media article in another language)
- Rule: If you copy and paste the translation you must indicate this this in a footnote using this text: *This text was translated from [name language] by Chat GPT [or whatever other tool you used]
- Rule: Any text from others' work which has been translated still needs a reference! Otherwise it's plagiarism.
- Advice: Don't use a translation tool. Practice your English instead! We're not grading grammar in this course anyway, we just need to understand what you are saying/arguing. The ideas are what matters.

Checking grammar: You may enter your own text into ChatGPT if you wish to check your grammar, spelling etc.
- Rule: If you do this and then copy and paste you must indicate this in a footnote on the relevant section using this text: *This text was checked for grammar and spelling by Chat GPT
- Advice: Again, we are not very concerned with grammar etc on this course, so just practice your writing skills! It's important to build written fluency. But if you struggle (e.g. with dyslexia or other challenges) language tools can be helpful.
