Welcome to the course Ecotoxicology with an emphasis on Ecology (BIO430)!!!

My name is Ingela Dahllöf and I am heading this course together with Åsa Arrhenius.

Dear students,

We are in the midst of our preparations for the course coming spring and will add more detalied information here, as planning moves along. Please note that changes are likely to occur up-until the start of the course, so do check in here from time to time.

I trust you all closely follow the GU´s webpage on the corona situation https://www.gu.se/english/about_the_university/news-calendar/coronavirus.

The course starts on the 25th of March and ends on the 5th of June 2021. We currently plan to have activities mainly on Zoom, but also on-campus for laborations in the Botan-house at the department of Biology and Environmental Science (Carl Skottsbergs gata 22B).  This is in accordance with the Vice-chancellor's decision on teaching for spring 2021. The course is lab intensive and includes one to two weeks stay at the university's Kristineberg research station (please note that there will be a fee for meals for this part, ~175 SEK/day).

First and foremost the course teaches ecotoxicological principles, approaches and methodology on the level of ecological communities and whole ecosystems. It will help you to develop a critical attitude to the field, and to make the connection to higher levels of biological complexity (communities and ecosystems). The course primarily explores the subject area in the aquatic environment, but examples will also be given from terrestrial ecotoxicology. The scientific basis for applied ecotoxicology will be discussed, and the course also briefly touches upon related scientific fields and applications, e.g. environmental chemistry and risk assessment of chemicals.

We aim to compose an inspiring blend of the different parts that make up the field of Ecotoxicology. Since Ecotoxicology is a broad and multidisciplinary field it is inevitably that a course like this will be more focused towards some areas. However, the activities at the course and reading the course literature will ensure that you will gain a broad knowledge in Ecotoxicology with an ecological perspective. We will also have lectures with latest "state-of-the-art" science within the field, giving you in-depth knowledge as well.

Hope to see you in spring!

Ingela and Åsa
