Please register at Student Portal, Ladok on line (at least one week before the start of the course)

Course information

The aim of the course to give students an interdisciplinary understanding of how the relationship between the sea and the human society has developed from prehistorical times and up to today, and a perspective on environmental and social impacts and conflicts associated with different uses of the sea and its resources. The first six weeks of the course consists of lectures given by university teachers from different disciplines. Group discussions and short written reports are complements. The last three weeks consist of group project work on a topic related to the course themes which result in an oral presentation.

Litterature - There is no specific course book that will cover the whole course content. Instead teachers will hand out scientific papers and reports for their lectures. So there is no need to buy any books for the course. However, the interdisciplinary book Perspectives on oceans pasts: A handbook of marine environmental history,  which is available for free in pdf-format (see Files/Course information/Course book) provides a good introduction to the course, and we recommend that you read selected chapters for the different lectures as a compliment to the other literature (see reading guidelines in the Course book folder).
