Kursöversikt

WELCOME to the course MAR210, Biogeochemical cycles in the sea, 15 credits

Please register at Student Portal, Ladok on line Länkar till en externa sida.(opens one week before the start of the course)

Course information

The course covers the biogeochemical cycles of (mainly) carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and silicon in the ocean from a global ocean perspective, including chemical, biological, and physical aspects.

The course has a modelling perspective and includes:.

  • Lectures
  • Exercises
  • Seminar

The course will give overall understanding of

  • Ocean budgets of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and silicon.
  • The role of sediments in the remineralization and burial of elements.
  • The marine carbon cycle and the relation between the carbon cycle and climate.

The course is based on Conservartion principles, box models, wind-driven circulation and deep sea circulation.

Central topics are:

  • Solubility of gases and air-sea gas exchange
  • Primary production and biochemical assmilation processes, its dependence of light and limiting elements
  • Transport processes between surface and ocean interior - particle fluxes, biological pump, solubility pump, carbonate pump,
  • Exchange between trophic levels,
  • Ecosystem models.

Schedule

The course starts with introduction by Zoom at 13.00 Jan 18. with the link:
