Welcome to LI1404 Semantics and Pragmatics, 7.5 credits
The course introduces the analysis of linguistic meaning, that is, semantic and pragmatic theories, and their relationship to neighbouring scientific areas. It covers the recent history of meaning theories, basic concepts in the study of meaning, and general principles followed in semantics/pragmatics theory development. Selected semantic and pragmatic concepts and theories are presented in more detail and are partially formalised. The areas of application for such theories is discussed. The course also aims to provide practical skills in semantic and pragmatic analysis through the investigation of language use in authentic materials.
