******************* Important notice*********************************************
The infection risk for Covid-19 is still exceptionally high! Therefore the on-campus activities need special safety regulations. Please read carefully the risk assessments of the microscopy room (Berglabbet 2.014) as well as of this course and follow the advices given in these documents. Violation of these rules can lead to exclusion from the respective activities!
**********************************************************************************************
This course consists of different elements, book chapters, recorded lectures, on-line lectures, on-site mineral identification practicals, on-site microscopy and on-line microscopy. Furthermore, I offer you on-line question and answer sessions as well as individual on-line meetings in order to clarify potentially open questions. In order to enable you to structure the course I will explain the different elements in the following:
The book chapters
For this as well as for the Petrology GVG 270 I have chosen a text book:
Cornelis Klein and Anthony Philpotts
Earth Materials 2nd Edition: Introduction to Mineralogy and Petrology 2nd Edition
ISBN-13: 978-1316608852
ISBN-10: 1316608859
It is available at the Cremona Book Store, which is located at the Chalmers campus at the entrance to the cafeteria. Here is the address:
Cremona Chalmers Bokhandel / Chalmers Konferens & Restauranger

I have created a schedule that should serve you as a guide through that course. In this schedule I list all the chapters from the text book that should be read on the respective day. The chapters include explanations, a summary of each chapter, review questions as well as suggestions for further reading. You should read through the chapter, the summary and check your understanding by answering the review questions. Reading the chapters is mandatory as the content of the book forms the basis for the understanding of mineralogical concepts.
The recorded lectures
Some chapters of the book are a very broad and need some further explanations. Therefore, I have recorded several lectures that are linked to the book, but provide additional information about the topics in the book chapters. The recorded lectures are uploaded as video files in the “Files” section of this canvas page. Watching and listening to the recorded lectures is also mandatory as the content of the recorded lectures is important for the practical parts of that course. However, you can watch/listen to the recorded lectures whenever you want, but before the first on-site mineral identification practical you should have listened to the first 7 recorded lectures.
The on-line lectures
Before the on-site mineral identification practicals and the on-site microscopy practicals I will give on-line introductory lectures. These lectures will be scheduled on zoom and you find the links to the respective lectures in the course schedule.
The question and answer (Q + A) sessions
I have scheduled several Q + A sessions during this course. In these sessions that will be scheduled on zoom you will have the chance to ask questions and to discuss various topics regarding the lectures and book chapters. I very much encourage you to use this opportunity to clarify open questions. Mineralogy is a very complex topic and the course is certainly very demanding. Thus, it is very likely that everyone has one or more questions regarding one or more topics. Therefore, it is helpful if you write down your questions during reading of the chapters or listening to the lectures and ask them in the Q + A sessions. In case you need further, personal assistance you can also schedule an individual on-line meeting.
The individual on-line meetings
In addition to the Q + A sessions you can send me an email with open questions and, if time allows, I will schedule a short zoom meeting with single students or smaller groups. Do not hesitate to formulate the questions already in the email, so that I can possibly answer the question directly or know at least what the topic of the on-line meeting should be.
The on-site mineral identification practicals
Mineralogy is the science that investigates minerals, hence without investigating minerals in a hand specimen this course would be rather pointless! However, as the Covid-19 infection risk is still very high we have to follow some simple, but important rules.
- Avoid meeting many people in the lecture room. In Berglabbet (2.014) there are only 6 persons allowed at a time, hence, we need to schedule several dates for the mineral identification practicals. We will try to do that with a doodle at the introductory on-line meeting on March 25th. Dependent on how many students take this course I will try to reduce this number as much as possible.
- Wearing face masks is mandatory in Berglabbet (2.014).
- Keep 2m distance among each other. This is not always possible, but you should keep the time of closer contact as short as possible.
- Use the differently marked doors as entrance and exit, respectively.
- Wash and disinfect your hands before you touch the minerals from the collection. I will disinfect the minerals after each practical in order to lower the infection risk for you.
- Stay home when you are sick!!! Please do not come to the course if you have any symptoms like cough, sore throat, fever, loss of taste, pain in your lungs, etc. ! In case you cannot come to the practicals we will find a solution regarding the exams etc.!
I am not sure whether we will be able to follow these and the folkhälsomyndigheten regulations and still have a meaningful hands-on practical, but I will try to arrange that the best it can be. I will discuss that also with you in the first on-line lecture on March 25th. In case there is too much health risk for all of us I will have to cancel the practicals.
The on-site microscopy practicals
For the on-site microscopy practicals apply the same rules. However, in addition to the hands-on-microscope practicals there will be an on-line microscopy course installed. I am at the moment still busy with the organization of this on-line microscopy course, but I will keep you informed about it.
I hope this course will be fun for you and we will be able to make the best of it. If you have suggestions for improvements of the course or course structure, please let me know immediately as I might be able to improve the course “on the fly”. I am happy about any suggestions.
Have fun
Matthias
