Welcome to the course European Marine Directives and Policies - an Interdisciplinary Perspective (MAR463, 15 credits)
Please register at Student Portal, Ladok on line (at least one week before the start of the course)
Course information
The aim of this course is to give an overview of the contents and requirement of EU marine environmental directives and policies, from legal, social and environmental perspectives.
Directives and policies covered includes the EU Habitats Directive, the Water Framework Directive, the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, the Maritime Spatial Planning Directive, and the Common Fisheries Policy.
The course is divided into two parts. The first part part (first six weeks) of the course consists of lectures given by university teachers from different disciplines and by invited representatives for marine/maritime authorities and agencies. Group discussions and short written reports of well-defined tasks are complements. One of these weeks we plan for a field trip to Tjärnö Marine Laboratory (costs for food at Tjärnö is payed by the students). Given the corona situation, the plans for the Tjärnö week are preliminary. If we can go to Tjärnö, it will be in two separate groups, one group Monday to Wednesday, the other group Wednesday to Friday. The group that is not at Tjärnö will do a group exercises related to environmental monitoring. For those that cannot go to Tjärnö, we will arrange alternative tasks. If we cannot go to Tjärnö, the group projects will run through the whole week, and we hope to arrange local shorter excursions in the Gothenburg region.
The second part (last four weeks) consist of individual project work on a topic related to the course themes which will result in both a short written report and a poster (including an oral presentation of the poster). There will be 1 mandatory group meeting during the project work.

For the first part of the course, the files are organised chronologically and divided into folders with the following structure: Week, Date (and name of teacher), Subfolders with material for lectures, exercises and literature.
