About

This CANVAS room is a resource for doctoral researchers and supervisors in HSM and in HDK-Valand. It is also a source of information for intending applicants to PhD studies. See the section on "Applying for PhD Studies."
In the Fall Semester of 2021 we began development work to make it a more reliable and comprehensive resource for all.
The first step is that the calendar function of this CANVAS room is now used to communicate information about shared events in the doctoral education space. (2020-21)
The second step is that we organize lists of key resources here as a fixed reference point throughout the several years of your doctoral studies (2021-22)
The third step is that we will describe standard routines connected to doctoral education (2022-23)

2. General Information

What is an ISP? This is the individual study plan that maps the concrete process of your own path of study. See more About Individual Study Plans

What is a "general syllabus" for doctoral studies? This is the description of the programme of study that a doctoral researcher follows in a given subject. It is the generic description of the path of study, which the concrete Individual Study Plan must satisfy. For more see below in section 3 for the current doctoral subjects in HSM and in HDK-Valand.

What is a basic course? This is a course that is required for all PhD researchers to take. For more see below in section 4 for the four basic courses that we currently teach.

What is an elective course? This is a course that a PhD reseracher elects to study and is not a specific requirement for every PhD researcher. For more see below in section 5 for the elective courses that we currently teach or are in development.

What is a % seminar? This is an event where the doctoral project is presented and discussed with others to mark key stages on the progress of your studies. See more "Etappseminarier" / "Percentage seminars" - also known as "stage seminars"

What is a co-discussant in a % seminar? This is a role enabling PhD researchers to actively participate in each other's % seminars. Information on what it means to be a co-discussant

3. List and links to all the general syllabi

There are two different doctoral examinations and qualifications in creative subjects in Sweden: the general PhD (aka Doctor of Philosophy) and the artistic PhD (aka Doctor of the Arts). The differences between these qualifications are partly contested. We discuss this with doctoral researchers within the education process when we guide you through reading the two national descriptors of the awards.

In each of our creative subjects we have two syllabi - the general PhD (aka Doctor of Philosophy) syllabus and the artistic PhD (aka Doctor of the Arts) syllabus

Changing syllabi: Within HDK-Valand there is an ongoing work to reduce the number of the doctoral subjects, by creating a single general subject with several sub-specialisations. Please note that from 1 March 2023 the subjects areas of Photography, Literary composition, Film, Design, Craft and Fine Art are gathered under the general heading of the "Artistic practice" syllabus, and any newly recruited PhDs in these areas will start on that syllabus.

Basic Course 4 follows a different logic as it is designed on the basis of organizing and participating in research events over several semesters. Summary: The key issue in terms of research ethics approval is that there are three basic scenarios:

A research project does not use human subjects, nor bio-materials, nor gathers personal data, and so does not require an ethical approval process through Etikprövningsmyndigheten (The Ethics Review Authority).
A research project does use human subjects, and/or bio-materials, and/or gathers personal data, and therefore requires an ethical approval process through Etikprövningsmyndigheten (The Ethics Review Authority).
It is unclear whether the research project falls within the remit of using human subjects, and/or bio-materials, and/or gathers personal data, and in this circumstance an “advice” can be sought from through Etikprövningsmyndigheten (The Ethics Review Authority) as to whether a full ethics process is required.

10. Doctoral Project Budget

The project budget refers to the resources (typically between 140,000 - 180,000 SEK*) available to do the project.

(This is not supervision costs etc; but materials costs pertaining to doing the research and producing the final submission. Especially it includes any print, design and proofing costs etc. A substantial part of the budget is reserved for the final submission.)

Every year as part of the ISP updating process, a doctoral researcher generates a project budget or updates the existing budget. This budget is an attachment uploaded with the ISP. Normally we do not plan to use more than 30,000 SEK (HDK-Valand) or 35,000 SEK (HSM) in any one year that is not the final year of the project.

From Autumn 2022 this process will be connected to a meeting between: (i) the doctoral researcher; (ii) the supervisor; (iii) the research education administrator; and (iv) a research economist. This routine will be used in both HSM and HDK-Valand.

* Historically there has been variation across institutions etc, and some PhD projects that are attached to externally funded research programmes will often have larger resources for special purposes connected to the nature of the research.

How do I actually use the budget?

To make purchases you will have to familiarize yourself with the your academy's purchasing routines. This is the same for all people working in the academy, and there is no special arrangements for doctoral researchers. Its the same for all employees. The infiormation on these systems is in the employee's intranet "medarbeterportalen"

Through these pages you can typically navigate to the information you need on how to make a purchase or booking. Often it may help to discuss the matter directly with the "purchaser". The purchaser is the administrator who actually makes the purchase using the University's systems and resources. It is wise to put a little time into learning about the way these bureaucratic routines work; and to put plenty of advance planning into things (i.e., not wait until your need is urgent to learn how to do something.)

11. Quality Assurance processes to enhance research education

The quality assurance and quality enhancement processes that we apply within the research education space have been re-developed in recent years as there is a new combination of internal review by the University's own processes, and external review by UKÄ - The Swedish Higher Education Authority. https://english.uka.se/

For the UKÄ the system for quality assurance in higher education consists of the following four components:
• appraisal of degree-awarding powers
• institutional reviews of the HEIs’ quality assurance processes
• programme evaluations
• thematic evaluations.

FACULTY LOCAL PROCESSES - QA IN RESEARCH EDUCATION

For those of us working across the Faculty in research education - working from the bottom up as it were - we are moving toward a three yearly cycle of quality assurance and enhancement work that focuses on three levels of our working processes:

the individual doctoral courses that we provide (basic and elective courses)
the individual subject areas in research education (Artistic Practice - includes Film Photography, Literature and Fine Art- ; Craft; Design; Music Education; Musical performance and interpretation; Performance Practices; and Research on Arts Education)
the organizational structures "research schools" that gather and/or separate subject areas.

Each year we intend to work on one of these levels specifically, as a way to focus our work.

2020-2021 PROCESS - QA IN RESEARCH EDUCATION

In 2020-2021 we did a major process of looking at the overall picture of our research education - all three levels courses, subject areas and organizational structures. We produced a very large volume of material, prompting us to consider how we can be more effective by producing less volume of documents, and more actual insight and practical change. 2022-2023 PROCESSES - QA IN RESEARCH EDUCATION

Internal process: In 2022-2023 we are doing the first layer of the three-yearly cycle: 1. the individual doctoral courses that we provide (basic and elective courses). The draft self-evaluation will be available here after October 31st.

External Review process: In 2022-2023 we are also doing the external subject QA reviews on three subject syllabi: (i) Performance Practice, (ii) Craft, and (iii) Artistic Practice (which includes Film, Foto, Literature and Fine Art). We are preparing a body of material to share with the external reviewers for compilation by October 31st. 12. Partnerships in research education

HSM and HDK-Valand are active in many partnerships that are specifically connected to research education.One key strategy has been to offer the doctoral level courses to researchers from Sweden and internationally. This is a means to ensure that the participant group in each iteration of the course is large enough to create useful cohort dynamics, and to create a diverse disciplinary and geopolitical milieu. In recent years we have had guest researchers on our doctoral courses joining from institutions in Austria, Belgium, Finland, Germany, Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands, Romania, and the United Kingdom.
