Establishing a project

Masters projects of  30, 45 or 60 credits are currently permitted (course plans for the respective courses are here:

30 credits KEM930

45 credits KEM945

60 credits KEM960

It is the responsibility of the student to identify a discipline of interest and contact potential supervisors for a project. Note that external projects, including those performed at Chalmers all require an internal GU examiner. You also have the right to have an internal CMB supervisor. Information about the research performed in the department, including links to the different research divisions at the department can be found HERE.

CMB does not pay anything to external (or internal) supervisors to cover bench fees, chemicals, expendables or other.

The process in steps

1. Start by making contact with a researcher of your interest,

2. Write a project plan or synopsis together with the supervisor (1 page A4, normal fonts). Include a time plan for the project.

3. Send the project plan to John, he will appoint an examiner for the project. He would be glad for suggestions though.  For projects within CMB, the supervisor can suggest a suitable examiner. For external projects you can contact one yourself that has the suitable competence. All examiners must be academic staff (i.e. Professor or Lektor ) at CMB.

It is the responsibility of the examiner to check that the synopsis and time plan are reasonable and allows the student to meet the learning objectives of the course.

4. When all parties are happy to proceed the THIS FORMshould be completed, signed and uploaded to this canvas page (under pages). If you do not have access, please email the student counselor in chemistry at svlkemi@cmb.gu.se. .

5. Send John and Per Martin an email andattach the documents (signed form and the project plan),  john.fletcher@chem.gu.se and svlkemi@cmb.gu.se

6. When John Fletcher has approved the documentation, you will be registered. If not, send an email to svlkemi@cmb.gu.se.

7. A ½ time progress meeting for a 60 credit project involving the student, supervisor(s) and examiner is mandatory and the date and time should be specified on the registration form. At the half time meeting, the student can  bring this form so that the examiner can sign and send for ladok registration if needed. 30 credits in ladok is neccesary for CSN or residence permit reasons. If the form is not sent in, the 30 credits will be added in ladok after the presentation of the thesis.

8. You need to register via ladok for every new semester.

Completion of the project

The presentation (TYPICALLY 25 MINUTES) should be announced to the department via e-mail containing the following details:

  • Project title
  • Students name
  • Course code and number of credits
  • Name of supervisor(s) and examiner
  • Date, time and location of the presentation

Examination of the project

The project is examined over 5 areas:

  • Implementation
  • Understanding
  • Results, analysis and interpretation
  • Written presentation and communication
  • Oral presentation and communication

An Excel file with the marking scheme can be found HERE

Grading is completed in the 2nd sheet of the file and is automatically summarised in sheet 1.

The grading should be completed by the examiner with input from the supervisor(s) for the Implementation section.

Each section should be completed in full and the summary page printed, signed and submitted to the student office along with a copy of the thesis.
