Message from the course coordinator:

NOTE ON READING: Reading is essential to the quality of this course. The more you read and the more attentively you read, the more you will get out of this course. Given that this course has been designed as a summer school with a short but intensive time plan, there is not much slack in the schedule and you are advised to reserve adequate time to study and to start reading early on. As you will, much of the reading is concentrated in the first two weeks, which is also when you'll have quite a few lectures and seminars, so if you can make a head start a week or two before the course starts, that will be a major benefit.

Given that some of you do not yet have access to the other pages of this course, please find an overview of the readings for all lectures in the first week linked here.

In order to ease your reading burden while also facilitating text reflection and peer exchange, we will use the format of peer briefing in the course. Concretely this means that we will reserve 10 minutes at the start of each lecture for you to exchange notes in pairs (or groups of 3). For some of the lectures, I have split the reading into two: A and B. At the start of the course, all students will also be grouped as either A or B. For the relevant lectures, students in group A need to read text A, while students in group B read text B. In the ten minutes before the lecture, you will be placed in an online break-out group pairing someone in group A with someone in group B to then use 5 minutes each to summarize the text you have read to the other person and vice versa.

The five questions below are intended to help guide your discussion, but you do not have to use these. They may be more adequate for some texts than for others, and you are free to structure your peer discussion the way you want.

  1. In what debate does the text intervene?
  2. What argument(s) does the text make?
  3. On what kind of evidence, data or argumentation is the argument based?
  4. What did you think was interesting, new or thought-provoking about the text?
  5. What did you think was a weak or problematic aspect?

Lecture times and format

Lectures will start on the hour (so 13:00 is one o'clock sharp, not 13:15 as is common in some academic environments). They will be held on zoom, using a recurring link. I will make sure to open the zoom-room a few minutes prior to the lecture to allow everyone to drop in. For those lectures that have an A and a B reading (see above), we will use the first 10 minutes for our peer exchanges.
