Welcome to the course GV0340 Earth Systems Science, 7.5 credits, Autumn 2021
You need to be registered on the course and be logged in to Canvas to access the information. Your login details are the same as for the Student Portal.
The planet Earth is comprised of various different spheres, which traditionally have been studied in isolation. However, all these different spheres are in fact connected, there are exchanges between them and feedback processes, forming a holistic system: the Earth System. Earth System Science acknowledges the interdependence of the different spheres and studies the planet we live on as a whole. This course has a special focus on the different spheres – lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere – and how they interact. In addition, we will look on the global environmental change from an Earth System perspective covering different time scales: past changes during the Holocene, current anthropogenic perturbations and scenarios for the future of Earth.
The main learning objective of the course is that “the student should have achieved a holistic understanding of the interactions between Earth’s spheres, relevant processes and environmental changes.” A particular focus should be in all cases on the interactions, couplings and feedbacks between different spheres.
The schedule is preliminary up to two weeks before the start of the course.
