Welcome to the course GV2500 Data Analysis for Earth Sciences, 7.5 credits, Autumn 2021

GV2500 HT21 will be an on-campus course! WELCOME BACK! For details, see https://studentportal.gu.se/minastudier/gvc However, computer-based learning - working through reading and exercises - is the main component of the course, and these can be done anywhere.

Course components with group exercises:

The only formally "compulsory" item is the exam:

although I would obviously recommend that you attend as many of the lecture and computer-lab sessions as possible! The Help Sessions you need only attend if you need help, however.

However, these are the teaching occasions where you do in-class group work exercises that are assessed:

So if you are not present for these exercises, you will need to form a group and work on them in your own time, or complete them yourself. For the Magnetism exercise 2021-11-18 we are split between 2 small computer labs, and so we will use Zoom anyway, so you can participate remotely.

SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE:

In this course we use the data analysis package Matlab. You may work on your own computers, or on computers in the student computer labs, or both. Please note that the student computer labs are not booked all day for the entire duration of the course.

  • if you intend to work on the the department's PCs, bring a USB "memory stick", or have some web-based cloud-solution organized.
  • if you intend to use your own lap-top, you can choose between a) installing Matlab, or b) using Matlab-online. For most of the exercises in the course, you can switch between them!
    • if you wish to download and install Matlab, find the instructions at the GU Student Portal. Any recent version of Matlab is fine, and any modern computer is sufficient. In the actual Matlab installer, I suggest you de-select all packages, and just install  the core MATLAB and the Statistics and Machine Learning Toolbox, the Curve Fitting Toolbox.
  • The course uses a few recorded screencasts where I demonstrate how to use Matlab - you might want to bring earphones if you listen to these in the student labs so you do not disturb others!
