NGN230 Climate Change, a Geographical Perspective, 15 credits, Autumn 2021 and

LGGE31/L9GE31 Geography for Teachers, 15 credits, Autumn 2021

Due to natural and anthropogenic factors the Earth System is permanently undergoing changes with varying amplitude and in a wide range of temporal and spatial scales. The processes forcing the Earth System to change can act on timescales all from geological to inter-annual as well as on spatial scales from local to global. How does environmental change look like on global and regional scales and what are possible processes behind?

In this course you will learn about the effects of climate change on man and the environment in different regions of the world. In addition to the global background we will discuss the characteristics of the Earth System in each region, its changes and the adaptability to changes. How does the Earth System change and what are possible causes. Ocean Acidification, desertification, long-range transport of atmospheric pollution and human migration as well as global sustainable development goals are among the more specific questions being discussed. 

A 7-day field trip takes us to Catalonia, North East Spain. Spain is considered one of the most affected countries in Europe when it comes to climate change and its consequences. During this geographic field trip we connect theory and reality of topics in the entire field of Physical Geography, even beyond climate change. We will meet local players and stakeholders giving us a broad geographic perspective on the topic. Be curious...

Practical Information

The first part of the course will focus on lectures, seminars, practical exercises in map interpretation, GIS and data analysis.

We will give you a broad perspective on the topic with many invited lecturers contributing with their field of specialization (e.g. geomorphology, paleoclimatology, climate strategy, climate modeling and regional climatology).

The second main part of the course is focused on the field trip area and project works.

The course will be concluded with the presentation of project works and a written exam.

Assignments

Students are expected to actively participate in the course. There are several assignments.

- group project work about a topic related to global/regional/local climate change. Report and a final presentation
- literature seminars
- smaller project work/site description/topic discussion, usually connected to Catalonia/Spain/Mediterranean area
- written exam
