Kursöversikt

Welcome to the course NGN190 Geographic Information Systems (GIS) 2, 7.5 credits, Autumn 21

You need to be registered on the course and be logged in to Canvas to access the information. Your login details are the same as for the Student Portal.

Most important for you are the sections Uppgifter/Assignments, Filer/Files, Anslag/Announcements, Chat, and Discussions. Basically, all material you need you can find in the files section. But start ideally in the assignments/uppgifter section where you are linked to the respective description and data for each exercise/task. Syllabus/Kursguide contains some general information (course plan, literature, more info etc.).

Syllabus

Literature. Since there is no written exam and you are expected to have some background knowledge of GIS, course literature is not mandatory. However, one recommendation is:

Swedish Harrie, L. (2013). Geografisk informationsbehandling: Teori, metoder och tillämpningar. Formas. ISBN 9789144088778. (numera 6:e upplaga) Äldre upplagor fungerar de med, men helst inte äldre än 3:e upplaga.

English Heywood, Cornelius, Carver (2011), An Introduction to Geographical Information Systems, 3rd Edition. Heywood is available as hard copy through common bookstores and in the university library both as hard copy and full-text online resource for you as a registered studentSearch on https://ub.gu.seLänkar till en externa sida. (Länkar till en externa sida.)

Exercises, tasks, and project work In the course there are 5 exercises, 2 tasks, and a project work for you to work with. There will be no written exam.

In the exercises, you download the exercise material and follow the step-by-step instructions prepared. For each exercise, you hand in a map or a print screen, as stated in the instruction. Once you finish the exercises, you can start working on the tasks.

For the tasks and project work, you don't get step-by-step instruction - you will have a chance to use your skills and knowledge from the exercises to solve a problem. For each task, you should hand in a final map as well as a written report where you present the method.

You can get help from our course assistants (Alaël, Ronja och Martin) or the course leaders (Andreas and Alexander). Just start working with the exercises and submit them eventually. Then you will receive comments whether all is fine with the submission or you have to complete something. Also, use the discussion section to post and discuss questions. Many of you will have similar problems to solve and helping each other is a great way of learning new software and techniques.

Software The course material is designed for QGIS, an open-source desktop GIS software. It is available for all platforms (Mac OS, Windows, Linux). Please find the latest version on http://qgis.org (Länkar till en externa sida.) . Right now version 3.1x. Versions may slightly differ but in general, you will find. There is very useful help under http://qgistutorials.com (Länkar till en externa sida.) which is a great support resource. Especially the tutorials may be a good side help in the case you did not use QGIS before.
