Course syllabus
Welcome to the MFA Fine Art Programme at HDK Valand.
We are looking forward to e-meeting you all and start to learn from each other!
This MFA Fine art focuses on the concept of publicness and your role as an artist in society, making it a very special pedagogical experience! You will be invited to stay open minded, sharp and observant of the environment around you, conscious that everything we will encounter on the way can change the way in which we think, we operate and we make. Are you ready for the challenge?
As per general recommendations and guidelines within the University, we anticipate that teaching and learning will be mostly online via Zoom until September 2021, and then reviewed at that time. This means that unfortunately we will have to wait a little while until we can all meet in real life.
Studio access is currently possible with adherence to a set of COVID 19 recommendations which you will be introduced to. Access is 24 hours. On the 1st of September from 9am to 12pm Studio Allocation and Seminar will take place in the studios with Maddie Leach.
Register your courses for enrolment
To be considered a student, you must be registered on your courses. You must also be registered to be able access all course material published on Canvas.
You can register from August 23rd until September 5th through Ladok.
If you have problems with the registration please contact admission@hdk-valand.gu.se
Zoom
To support your induction to our programme, we are offering some introductory sessions in week 33.
We invite you to join an "Introduction to Zoom" session with our colleague Maddie Leach on Monday August 30, 9:00-10:00. To join this meeting, please join this link:

This session will give you a short overview of the Zoom platform and how we use it for group teaching. You may already be familiar with Zoom, so this is an optional meeting for those who would like an introduction or refresher after Summer!

Course Schedule
HDK-Valand uses Time Edit software for course timetables. Each course canvas page (FRAKP1 and FRAKK1) have a page titled schedule and on there you can easily access the Time Edit schedule for each course.
While Time Edit is largely correct, at moments there may need to be last minute changes so it is always good to double check the canvas page as well as your canvas email regularly. All information regarding teaching sessions, assignments, examinations can be found on Canvas.
Digital Learning Platforms used in the Programme
Each course in the MFA programme will use their own configuration of digital learning platforms. Alongside zoom, all courses are organised through canvas. If you are not familiar with Canvas, it can take a bit of getting used to, but it should be quite accessible to get the hang of it. On the student portal you can find a helpful guide here if you are unsure about anything, and Canvas also offers information here. You can also email the service centre if you cannot find an answer in the guides: servicecenter@gu.se
Other platforms that may be used in the programme include Miro and Padlet.
Miro is a organisational collaborative platform. You can easily sign up for a free account. In Miro, you can create "boards" which gives you space to map out ideas and share content with others - it is particularly helpful in getting a sense of where interconnections lie. If you are not familiar with Miro, it can take a bit of time to fully get to grips with it and to understand all the different things it can do. Here is comprehensive guide which we recommend you have a look through.
Padlet is a simplified version of miro, functioning more as a virtual bulletin board. Similarly to Miro, you can also sign up easily for a free account. This youtube video aimed at introducing students to Padlet may be helpful to watch.
Bootcamp! (Week 36)
In order to become familiar with the main focuses of this programme, you will begin the programme with an intensive “Bootcamp” during week 36.
The Bootcamp will consist of a series of exercises, workshops, lectures, and group discussions centered on cooperation, critique, criticality, knowledge, research and enquiry. It will be a way to learn more about the terminology and content of the course but also to get to know each other, the two course leaders during the first semester (Viviana Checchia and Cathryn Klasto) and establish a working group dynamic. You can find information (as well as zoom links) about each Bootcamp session on both the FRAKP1 and the FRAKK1 canvas pages.
During the Bootcamp, you are asked to present your own focus of interest as a way of sharing with the group the catalyst which drives your motivation for joining the programme. These presentations will take place in the afternoon of the 6th of September and the afternoon of the 7th September. You will be allocated a time slot, which can be found on both the FRAKP1 and the FRAKK1 canvas pages.
You will have 10 minutes to share the current focus of your practice and the ideas you have for your research. After this, there will be 5 minutes per person allocated for others to
ask any questions which may have arisen.
You will share your presentation through zoom, so please prepare some images or a power point, whatever would help you best to introduce your interests. This will be your first presentation to the rest of the class, so think carefully about how you want to use your time. Take some notes to accompany your speech if helpful. Rehearse and figure out what is best to prioritise. You only have 10 minutes so we are not expecting you to give us a complete overview of your practice, rather focus on where you are at at this current moment as you begin the programme.
This bootcamp marks the beginning of the two years we have to learn from and with each other; we hope it will be a fruitful and valuable way to start!
