Examiner: Jason E Bowman jason.bowman@akademinvaland.gu.se

The course contains the written component of the Master's Examination project. Students will build upon their written coursework produced for Contextualisation 2 in term 2. The essay should develop from a question that will be analysed throughout the text. Close attention should be paid to contextualising the analysis in relation to precedents, antecedents, and existing work in the field of the essay’s subject, both practically and theoretically.

Students will be supported to develop a clear and coherent argument, taking the form of a claim that they will establish and support, using concrete examples of other work and literature throughout the paper. The purpose of this exercise is to further develop the conventions and skills required in critical thinking and academic writing, and also to help situate the student’s own work within the framework of a larger theoretical context, as well as in relation to existing debates and practices within the contemporary art world.

The course`s educational bases and learning activities

The course operates through three inter-connected activities:

  1. Lectures and seminars

A lecture and seminar at the beginning of the semester provides students with practical information on the Master's essay. It is also an opportunity to discuss different forms of text, both those that can be utilized in the essay work, but also what type of text the Master's essay can be.

  1. Workshops

A series of workshops will practice your skills to search for literature and evaluate your sources, to establish a solid research question, and referencing. Workshops will be both teacher led and student organized.

3.  Tutorials

Students have a series of tutorial sessions, both individual and in group, in which they receive feedback to support essay drafts, building on the foundational work made in Spring 2021 (FRAKK2). Although this task is shared by several Fine art teachers, students will have the same supervisor throughout the course. However, the second tutorial is delivered by a different teacher than usual, serving as a second reader who may provide the student with a different reading of the text and its topic. During the final tutorial students will be provided with clear advice on how to complete their essays and fulfill the learning outcomes.

The course is structured as a schedule in Canvas, where teaching, tutorials, and assignments are presented in modules week by week. Please note that individual tutorials are agreed with supervisors and therefore not visible in the Timeedit schedule.

Students will work on their essays in googledrive, in live documents which can be connected to Zotero, that will handle references and notes. Supervisors will give feedback and write comments on the text drafts in the same online software, which will enable students to act on the advice given in a structured order.

Drafts should be prepared for reading and feedback one week – 5 work days – before tutorials.

The essay must be written in English!

The final essay should be submitted as either a Word document, or a pdf, and include the following. If you intend in any way to diverge from this format, please seek guidance from the educator:

  • Cover page, containing the following information: Your name, the title of the essay, title of the course. Template for cover page (link will be available Fall 2021)
  • Body of text
  • Bibliography
  • Pagination throughout, excluding the cover page
  • Final essays should be 5000 words (-10% as minimum, or +20% as maximum length), including footnotes but excluding the bibliography.
  • Font should be Times New Roman, 12 pt. Spacing 1,5

Students are responsible for proofreading the essays. Please make use of your software’s spelling support, and utilize sites such as Grammarly.com, as a first step. It is recommended that you also use second readers to help you spot flaws, mistakes, etc.

Final essays should be uploaded to Canvas, through appropriate designated link, before deadline.

The essay is completed by 17 December 2021, see weekly modules in the upcoming course on Canvas for submission details and link to upload.
