Hello everybody.
Welcome and thank you for joining this course. We will explore a fascinating set of themes, debates, concepts, and case studies over the next three months. The structure of the course is very straightforward, consisting of three modules, each of which is generally divided into thematic weeks. Apart from your inputs into the lectures and seminars, there will be two individual assignments due, an academic essay on 25 February, and a policy-oriented written assignment on 16 March. The latter assignment is linked to a student-led presentation seminar (18 March) and a final scenario workshop at the very end of the course (21 March).
The whole course involves on-campus activities and therefore requires you to be in Gothenburg. However, in view of the new regulations and guidelines by the Swedish government and the university, many activities will be conducted online. We will send out a separate announcement with details very soon. We tried to add as many interactive and dynamic elements to make it exciting. Because of the reading pair arrangement (see below), zoom rooms for the lectures will in principle open 'on the hour' (e.g. 13:00), unless otherwise stated.
During the first lecture (17 January, 10:00-12:00) we will give you an overview of the course's substance, logistics, and expectations. You can find all information about the lectures and assignments under Modules. Do drop us a line if any questions arise.

NOTE ON READING: Reading is essential to the quality of this course. The more you read and the more attentively you read, the more you will get out of this course. In order to ease your reading burden while also facilitating text reflection and peer exchange, we will use the format of peer briefing in the course. Concretely this means that we will reserve 10-15 minutes at the start of each lecture for you to exchange notes in pairs (or groups of 3). More concretely, we will open the zoom room 'on the hour' (usually 13:00) to then start at 'quarter past' (usually 13:15) and we will use this time to discuss the reading in pairs. For most of the lectures, we have split the reading into two: A and B. reading A B.pdfAt the start of the course, all students have been (or will also be) grouped as either A or B (click here for overview). For the relevant lectures, students in group A need to read text A, while students in group B read text B. In the 10-15 minutes before the lecture, you will be placed in an online break-out group pairing someone in group A with someone in group B (see here for pairs) to then use 5 minutes each to summarize the text you have read to the other person and vice versa. The five questions below are intended to help guide your discussion, but you do not have to use these. They may be more adequate for some texts than for others, and you are free to structure your peer discussion the way you want.
