Course introduction

An introductory meeting will be held January 17th, starting at 14.15 in room C444. This meeting is for students on both the BA- and advanced levels. We will discuss the structure of the course, and discuss some important deadlines and choices you need to make (about electable courses and/or thesis topic) in the near future. It is very important that you attend this meeting. If you are unable to attend, please contact Ylwa as soon as possible.

You can find the information from the introductory meeting in this powerpoint (in Swedish) and here in English.

Thesis Writing Seminars

For students on the advanced and BA-levels who write a thesis this semester, there is a seminar series on method (led by Anna-Sofia Maurin and Ylwa Sjölin Wirling), as well as a couple of meetings for discussion of manuscript drafts available. At least some of these seminars will be held jointly with students on the BA and MA level in practical philosophy. Attendance is not mandatory (apart from at the final seminar at the end of the semester) but highly recommended. The first meeting takes place directly after the introduction meeting on January 17th, starting at 15.15. At that meeting we talk about choosing a topic for your thesis and managing your time.

Below you find a schedule with important dates (including relevant deadlines, if applicable) and zoom links, for the seminar series and events related to the thesis writing process. Information about more thesis draft seminars will follow in due course.

17/1, 15.15-17.00, room J236: Method 1 (Choosing a topic for your thesis; Time-management).

3/6 from 9.15  "Uppsatsopponering" (Seminar discussion of all finished theses – mandatory for passing grade on thesis writing course)

The Courses

We will discuss this in more detail during the introductory meeting, but here is a brief overview of the courses and their content.

Reading courses: For the 2nd Cycle reading courses (FT2101; FT2201; FT2301), you have a choice between a number of different courses (listed under Electable Courses which you find under Sidor in the left-hand column).

Thesis writing: Students registered on courses FT2601/FT2700/FT2801 are expected to write either a masters (30 hp) or a magister (15 hp) thesis. Ylwa Sjölin Wirling is in charge of assigning supervisors and advise on suitable topics for a thesis. It is important to be flexible with the choice of topic to ensure that you get high-quality supervising (it is very difficult to supervise a thesis on a topic which you know nothing about, and it is very difficult to write a good thesis without adequate supervision). Information about who is available to supervise this semester will be offered at the introductory meeting.

Students on advanced level are likely to already be familiar with the art of thesis writing in philosophy since their BA (kandidat) thesis. Still, here are some tips:

* We recommend that you take a look at some previous student theses on MA level that have received a good grade, in order to see what is expected of you in terms of length, level, and form. Here are some examples:

"New Eleaticism"

"Then and Back Again"

* There is no obligatory literature, but here are some texts with general tips on what to think about when writing a paper in philosophy.

Portmore, Douglas W., ”Tips on Writing a Philosophy Paper”. Available here (link to external page)..

Pryor, Jim, ‘Guidelines on Writing a Philosophy Paper’. Available here (links to external site).

Vaughn, Lewis, Writing Philosophy: A Student’s Guide to Writing Philosophy Essays, New York och Oxford, Oxford University Press, 2006/2018 (there are a few copies at the GU library, and the book can be bought online for instance here.)
