Course syllabus / DBA24A – Design practice, Sustainability & Ethics

In this course, emphasis will be put on how you as a becoming designer approach and navigate the complex concepts of sustainability and ethics. You will further develop critical, analytical, and artistic approaches to the subject and profession of design and meet both active practitioners and researchers within the design field.

Concepts such as Anthropocene, deep time, and shadow places from the course ”The lives of objects” will be contextualized and you will be asked to further develop your understanding of these. Through three modules you will activate your own engagement to develop a design practice that responds to the central concepts of sustainability and ethics. And explore how we can fulfill our fundamental needs via inner methods through design, and how our design can be created in symbiosis with nature.

Lectures (some online), seminars, workshops, and tutorings will be arranged throughout the course. Due to the pandemic, it is at this point hard to mention whether these are arranged IRL or online, but we aim to have IRL-learning!

The first week of the course, also the first module (w. 8, 21-25 Feb) will be mostly individual studies, no lectures since all teachers have planning week. We will meet Monday 21^th Feb 15:30-20:00 at Bio Valand. We will have a brief intro to the course and kick-off your processes by watching a movie together. This movie and the below literature will be starting point for your individual studies for the rest of the first week. The other two modules in the course will be build one the knowledge you gain in this first week.

The book by Ann Thorpe is assigned during this week and its bibliography is below. The book can be found in both English and Swedish. We recommend that you invest in buying this book for your home library (you can get both languages via an ebook pretty easily it seems, e.g. 169kr for the Swedish version). Yet, also, the library has copies in both hardcopy and Ebook (the library has many copies of the English Ebook for instance). A more comprehensive and formal course intro – where we go through the course structure, the modules, assignments, the learning outcomes, and the examinations along the course and how it will be used – will take place Monday 28th Feb 09:00-16:00. You will find the schedule in Timedit for now, but when the course starts we will use canvas calendar.
