Course syllabus

The course aims to develop doctoral students’ knowledge and skills and ability to link theoretical frameworks, research issues, scientific methodology and source material by developing a thoughtful, adequate and well-motivated research design. The course is based on general literature on how research design is applied in the social sciences, and the doctoral student is given an opportunity to try to apply the lessons from this literature in their own research projects. The course covers topics such as:

  • What is research design and how does it relate to research questions and methods?
  • Identifying an overarching research problem and formulating relevant research questions
  • Connecting to relevant theories and scientific discussions
  • Finding empirical sources that are relevant for the research questions and choosing proper methodological tools
  • Formulating the purpose of the project
  • Formulating the short version of the project (the “elevator speech”)
