Anthropology as a discipline has been global from its inception, emerging in the late 19th century as an intellectual response to colonialism and sociocultural difference. In this class we think briefly about anthropology as a form of global studies, and then discuss how anthropologists have studied the global, focusing particularly on human-environmental relations in relation to modern (20th century and later) efforts to manage the environment. Among other issues, this topic gives us a glimpse into what some anthropologists call the pluriverse.
