Course information

In this course you will learn about marine organisms, how to identify them, as well as their phylogeny and systematics. The course covers both animals and plants, and is based at the University´s marine research station Tjärnö marine laboratory. The course is in many ways unique by its focus on actually seeing the animals and plants we study, and by its many hands-on sessions. The students will also learn, and experience, various field-sampling techniques used in marine biology. The course language is English.

The course runs between Aug 29 to Oct 28 and includes the following parts and main teachers:

  • Introduction to taxonomy and phylogeny, Fredrik Pleijel (Aug 29)
  • Macroalgae, Gunilla Toth (Aug 30-Sep 6)
  • Benthic invertebrates, Fredrik Pleijel/Rhian Waller (Sep 7-Oct 7)
  • Microalgae, Adil Yousif (Oct 10-14)
  • Fish, Leon Green (Oct 17-21)
  • Zooplankton, Milad Pourdanandeh (Oct 24-28)

For an overall schedule of the course follow this link. The roll-call takes place at 11.30 Aug 29 at Tjärnö. Detailed schedules for each part of the course are found under Modules. The schedule may change up until two weeks before course start.
