Course syllabus
Dear students and warmly welcome to the course on Theory of Photography!
The image above is a view from an exhibition by the photographer Jens S Jensen in 1974. He had documented the suburb Hammarkullen outside Gothenburg and the work was shown at the local school. The image contains several aspects of what we will read, view and discuss together in the course: the relation between image and text, photography and activism, the agency of photography, ways of exhibiting and publishing photography, and photography, feeling and ethics.
The course contains two integrated parts: one focus on photography and theory, and the other part is an introduction to artistic research called MA-forum. The MA-forums are done together with the students in Film and Literary Composition. The texts and guests will be from research in all three subjects, and the MA-forum will prepare you for the possibilities that artistic research and research education can give.
You find all the information about the course at the Canvas page for FOA 127. We meet on Thursdays and the classes contains lectures, artist talks and seminars where we discuss the texts and other material that are selected for each class. The seminar form is an active and collaborative way of learning, and it is important to be prepared. You are asked to choose and comment quotations from the texts, which you upload before the classes. For more detailed information and instructions see the module for each class in Canvas.
The teachers are Niclas Östlind, Julia Tedroff and Mirka Duijn and Balsam Karam (MA-forum), but you will also meet several guests.
