MAFI12 - Critical Reflection (7,5 hp)

MAFI 12 (reflective Course) is entwined with MAFI11 (Film Practice). The course aims to develop (1) the ability to reflect on one’s own and others' filmic expressions when it comes to ethics, aesthetics, context and themes. The course stimulates critically (re)thinking social and temporal issues in and trough the film practice, by testing and trying as well as by discussing different filmic ideas and theories. The course aims to develop the ability to identify and review the importance of how the surrounding societies relate to the students own filmic work as well as the ability to elaborate on one’s own inquiry as a basis for film work are developed.

The course’s educational bases and learning activities are:

Intensives

The MAFI11 Practical Course and the MAFI12  Reflection Course are interwoven. The course will be implemented in the form of several intensive periods of study (So called 'Intensives') which usually consist of lectures, seminars, individual and group-based project work, peer feedback, written and audiovisual exercises and individual tutoring. An intensive period usually lasts one week and is preceded by several weeks of self- study. Detailed instructions (briefs) for the intensive period are handed out before the self-study weeks.

MA Forum

As a part of the MAFI12 H21 Reflection Course MA Forum sessions will be organised. The MA Forum runs over two semesters, fall MA1, spring MA1. Each semester will have four sessions in total.

General information

The MA Forum is where Master students across programs meet (Film, Literary Composition and Photography) and are introduced to foundational concepts and theories that are valuable for developing a critical, artistic practice within a research environment.

Being master students you are all asked to do or think in terms of ‘research’. According to European law each master should be preparatory for a PhD, which means: you should have the knowledge that make you prepared for PhD-studies (the third and highest cycle in the educational system). Artistic practice is in itself exploratory and artistic research as a discipline has widened the possibilities for artists, filmmakers, writers, musicians, designers, etc. to do research in and through their artistic practice. The focus can be on developing the different artistic practices, but the research can also engage in other questions and problems and often in dialogue with other disciplines.

The research departs from within an art practice and thinks through text, images and sounds and use the art practice as a conceptual framework, a methodological vehicle as well as a means of dissemination. But what does that entail precisely? How does this relate to knowledge and knowledge production? What knowledge does an artist produce? And for whom? Who are their peers? What is the ideal context? In the MA Forum we reflect on different foundational concepts in the context of a research environment.

Preparation

We will always ask you to do preparatory work for the MA Forum sessions. You can i.e. be asked to read articles, watch clips or think about a proposed question. The preparatory work is always given two weeks prior to the session. Take into account that the workload for this preparatory work will be 2 to 3 hours for each MA Forum session. Film students: We advice you to do the preparatory work before your intensive week starts.

MA Forum Reflections

After each MA Forum session you will have to submit a written reflection about the discussed subject. Each session will have its own guidelines for writing the reflections. In general, you are required to write no more than 500 words in total, connecting the proposed theory to (your own) practice. You have to submit these reflections within seven days after your intensive.

The MA Forum reflections have to be submitted in the ‘deliverables’ section in the MA Forum module in your Canvas Course. Respective teachers responsible for these courses will read the reflections and take it into regard as part of your overall development within the respective course.

MA Forum responsibles for Fall 2022  - Mirka Duijn (mirka.duijn@gu.se), Niclas Östlund (niclas.östlund@gu.se), Balsam Karam (balsam.karam@gu.se)
