Course Syllabus
WELCOME to the Course BIO451 Experimental marine ecology V23!
Please register at Student Portal, Ladok on line (at least one week before the start of the course)
Course information
In this course you will get a "tool box" containing all you need to know to run a scientific experiment. The course starts with a theoretical part including an overview of hypothesis testing and experiments in different areas of marine ecology, experimental design and statistics, and scientific writing. The second part of the course is a group project where you will work rather independently on a real research question under supervision. In the last two weeks, you will practise your writing skills by writing a report of the group work in the form of a scientific paper (this is done individually).
The course runs between March 23 and June 2. The major part of the course (March 27 to May 17) will take place at Tjärnö marine laboratory. There will be a break for Easter (April 6-10) with distance teaching the week after Easter (April 11-14). The last two weeks (May 22 to June 2) will be devoted to distance teaching. There will not be any teaching in Gothenburg.
The roll-call will take place on Zoom (there will be a link here closer to course start) at 09:00 on Thursday March 23.
Accommodation at Tjärnö is free, but there is a cost for the food (6140 SEK excluding weekends and the Easter holiday). If you stay over weekends, the cost is 360 SEK per weekend (the total cost for staying the whole course is 7940 SEK). There are unfortunately no cooking facilities available for students at the lab. During your stay, you will share room with another student. Please bring bed linnen and towels, as well as warm and waterproof clothing. The course involves a lot of field work!
If you have special food requirements then contact Henrik Pavia at henrik.pavia@marine.gu.se minimally two weeks prior to the course start.
Teachers on the course are:
Henrik Pavia (henrik.pavia@marine.gu.se), Gunilla Toth (gunilla.toth@gu.se), Mats Lindegarth (mats.lindegarth@marine.gu.se), Ann Larsson (ann.larsson@marine.gu.se), Jon Havenhand (jon.havenhand@marine.gu.se), Benedikt Brunner (benedikt.brunner@gu.se), Luisa Kumpitsch (luisa.kumpitsch@gu.se).
