Hello everybody.

Welcome and thank you for joining this course. We will explore a fascinating set of themes, debates, concepts, and case studies over the next three months. The structure of the course is very straightforward, consisting of three modules, with the main (middle) module sub-divided into thematic weeks. Apart from your inputs into the lectures and seminars, there will be one group assignment (due 2 February) and two individual assignments due, an academic essay on 3 March (with a first draft due on 27 February), and a policy-oriented written assignment on 16 March. The latter assignment is linked to a student-led presentation seminar (20 March).

The whole course involves on-campus activities and therefore requires you to be in Gothenburg. During the first lecture (16 January, 13:15-15:00) we will give you an overview of the course's substance, logistics, and expectations. You can find all information about the lectures and assignments under Modules. Do drop us a line if any questions arise.

See you on 16 January!

Bart and Ellinor

NOTE ON READING: Reading is essential to the quality of this course. The more you read and the more attentively you read, the more you will get out of this course. In order to ease your reading burden while also facilitating text reflection and peer exchange, we will use the format of peer briefing in the course. Concretely this means that we will reserve 10-15 minutes, some time before each lecture for you to exchange notes in pairs (or groups of 3). For most of the lectures, we have split the reading into two: A and B.

At the start of the course, all students have been (or will also be) grouped as either A or B. For the relevant lectures, students in group A need to read text A, while students in group B read text B.

The five questions below are intended to help guide your pair discussion, but you do not have to use these. They may be more adequate for some texts than for others, and you are free to structure your peer discussion the way you want.

  1. In what debate does the text intervene?
  2. What argument(s) does the text make?
  3. On what kind of evidence, data or argumentation is the argument based?
  4. What did you think was interesting, new or thought-provoking about the text?
  5. What did you think was a weak or problematic aspect
