Length:         15 ECTS (BIO524) or 7.5 ECTS (BIO523/KMG046)

Prerequisites:     For admission to the course, approved courses of 120 credits in the field of natural science are required, of which at least 15 credits must be within the main subject molecular biology and 15 credits in the main subject chemistry or equivalent. In addition, applicants must prove their knowledge of English.

Time:             Fall term 2023. Please observe that the first lecture takes place 13/11

Aim:    This course shall focus on a building an overall understanding of the discovery and development of novel pharmaceuticals (drug discovery/development), covering a wide spectrum of target selection, lead discovery/optimization, nonclinical in vitro/in vivo safety and efficacy studies, clinical trials, and market authorization. Examples are given of existing drugs, how they have been developed, and their mechanisms of action. The course is mostly theoretical, but in certain parts, practical demonstrations can also be included. The Individual Project (see below) is mandatory part of the course for BMG524 only.

Literature:    Scientific review papers, a separate list will provided by individual lecturers via Canvas.

Exam:    Written, at the end of the course. Sign up in Ladok. Time: 9 Jan 13:30-18:30

--> Students of KMG046 will be automatically signed up for the first exam. Re-exam: send an email to studieadmmolbio@cmb.gu.se.

Items in course:    The course is based on lectures and and study visit to Astra Zeneca, Mölndal. The Individual Project (see below) is mandatory part of the course for BMG524 only.

INDIVIDUAL PROJECT (for students at BIO524 only)

Aim: Your task is to write a project work, to cover the chosen topic in depth, gathering material from original research articles and reviews.
Learning objectives
•You will be able to work individually to produce a written report covering the background/current issues/future perspectives of their topic.
• You will present your work to the rest of the group in a 10 min presentation, followed by a question-to-answers session of 5 min.
Instructions
You choose your topic of interest from a list of project titles which will be presented at the first lecture. You will have an individual supervisor for one progress meeting, the marking of the written project, and the follow-up meeting after submission of the work.
The projects need to be 3000 words (+/-300) including figure legends/tables but not the reference list. You are expected to gather information from original research articles and reviews. A suggested starting point is:  http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez. It must be you own original piece of work - your work is scanned when submitted to detect copying.
Disposition of the project:
Abstract - Brief summary of approximately 200 words
Background to the project - background information
Discussion - focus on the main points of interest/debate on this subject area and future perspectives
Conclusions – end with a final summary
Reference list
Time line: The topics and the timelines for submission and oral presentation will be provided in connection of the first lecture of the course.
Grading of the individual project
Written report and oral presentation are combined to give the final mark: 80% written project, 20% oral presentation.
Written text - the following will be considered:
            1) Quality of writing
            2) Depth of analysis
           3) Development of points for debate/theories and future perspectives
Oral presentation - the following will be considered:
            1) Was the presentation clear and easy to understand?
            2) Were the slides/overheads clear?
            3) Was the subject well introduced?
            4) Were clear conclusions presented?
            5) Was the time limit followed?
