Course syllabus

Welcome to  EU2500 Master's thesis for European Studies, 30 credits, Spring 2023!

This is the final course on the Master's Programme in European Studies.

The course formally starts on the 18th of January 2023, but there will be some lectures, seminars and one submission during the autumn semester 2022 as well. The introduction will take place on the 8th of November 15:15-17:00.

The thesis course term brings few meetings, but we consider all the seminars during it to be obligatory, and absence will need to be compensated with an extra assignment.

Access to Canvas and registration

This course has a bit different structure compared to other courses since even though the course formally starts the 18th of January 2023, you will have some sessions of the course already during the autumn semester 2022. See below for information. When it comes to access to Canvas, Double Degree students and students that have applied to the course on UniversityAdmissions.se / antagning.se will get full access to the Canvas page on the 10th of December and will be able to submit the first assignment "PM1" on the 18th of December. Before the 10th of December, you will only be able to see "Syllabus" here on Canvas and not "Assignments", "Modules" etc.

When it comes to registration in Ladok, your registration will be dependent on your previous studies. In order to get registered when the course formally starts the 18th of January 2023, you need to have a pass grade on:

- at least two of the core courses in the Master's Programme in European Studies, a total of 20 credits,

- one semi-elective course, 15 credits,

- all exercises on your method's course, and you need to have submitted the Final Paper on your method's course. This is because when the thesis course starts and you need to be registered in Ladok, the grading of the Final Paper's will not yet be finished.

If you do not meet these requirements when the course starts the on 18th of January, you can get registered whenever you meet the requirements. This means that if you for example meet the requirements in March, you will get registered then. You can attend seminars and submit your PM2, your Half-way paper and the preliminary thesis title even if you are not registered.

Study Administrator Vendela Lundskog will register students on the course as soon as you fulfill the entry requirements.

In order to submit your Master's Thesis, you need to be done with the first semester of the programme, the semi-elective course and the method's course.

Stata- For students with quantitative research

Do you need help with Stata?

The quant help is a resource available for students writing their political science thesis. The idea is to facilitate the proper use of quantitative methods and statistics, and to improve inferences and interpretations. Josefine Magnusson and Albert Wendsjö are responsible for this service. Students can email their quant-related questions to helpdesk_kvant@pol.gu.se. We will respond and try to sort out your query via email or in a short Zoom meeting, if needed. We answer all questions that are related to the use of quantitative methods in your thesis. Try to be as specific as possible when asking your questions; this will greatly improve our ability to provide a good answer. We will not have the time to review very long sections of your thesis. Questions can (for instance) concern data management, which statistical method you should use, how your model should be specified, the interpretation of your output, how to implement a specific method in the statistical software you are using etc. We are happy to answer all reasonable quant-related questions!

For Stata users, you can find the most common questions on http://www.stathelp.se/ (Länkar till en externa sida.) (information available in both Swedish and English). Another good site is https://stats.idre.ucla.edu/stata/ (Länkar till en externa sida.)

If you have additional questions and need help, please contact helpdesk_kvant@pol.gu.se
