Course Overview

The focus of MAFI 22 is twofold: Firstly, this course focuses on the dissemination and communication of a finished (inquiry-led) audiovisual-work in a variety of public contexts by means of i.e., screenings, public discussions etc., taking into account the research that has been conducted during the master. Secondly, the focus will be on the further professional development of the students, positioning themselves in the context of future professional environments. These two objectives go hand in hand: The finished audiovisual-work is seen as only one outcome of an overarching (continuous) inquiry-led practice with a specific, defined focus.

The aim of MAFI22 is for the students to improve their knowledge about the fields they can operate in, to then be able to strengthen their position and visibility in those fields. The course involves the (student-led) organization of two public moments on which students share their work; One ‘group screening’ during a film festival and one additional moment of public dissemination at a later stage in the course. In addition, workshops around professional development will be organized, with the aim to work towards detailed individual professional development plans.

Intensives

The MAF22 H23 Practical Course will be conducted through individual assignments, seminars, workshops and group discussions that are organized in three 'intensives'; Intensive weeks of study. An intensive usually spans one week. In preparation of those intensives you will be asked to conduct individual learning. The Intensives:

Intensive #6: GIFF Exam Screening

Intensive #6 will take place in week 3 and will focus on the finalization of the students' fine cut as well as the organization of the GIFF exam screenings, during the Gothenburg Film Festival in February 2023. This event will be student-led. The GIFF Exam Screenings take place in week 5.

Intensive #9 Professional Development

Intensive #9 takes place in week 16 and 17 and will focus on designing a professional development plan, as well as working towards future projects.

In a three day workshop we ask students to make an inventory of their own activities in the field of film, to then work on a detailed business/practice plan. The purpose is to train the ability to plan for one's own continued professional activities in the field of film, think strategically about one's own business and to find tools to continue work after school.

As a part of Intensive #9 students will also be introduced to the wider Swedish film network, funds, broadcasters, unions and other film organizations. Finally, the students will be working towards future projects, pitching projects both in a film and research context.

Intensive #10 Exam

Intensive #10 will be the joined exam for the MAFI22 and MAFI23 course. The emphasis of the exam will be on the Essay that will be written as a part of MAFI23. MAFI22 will be examined through written and oral assignments for this exam.

Individual assignments

As a part of MAFI22 you will also be working towards:

A strategic distribution plan for your exam-film.
A second screening moment that should take place during the semester, preferably in week 19.

These assignments are following up on the preliminary work that you have done during Intensive #4 ‘Circulation and Dissemination’ in Week #45 in 2022. The assignments are connected to Intensive #6, but run over a longer period during MAFI22. Students are required to work on the two plans independently.

One on Ones

As a part of the MAF22 H23 Practical Course there will be One on One meetings with Karin Ekberg, Samuel Malm and Dan Sandkvist. The meetings are 45 minutes long. They are designated to discuss the students' plans for the circulation and dissemination of their individual exam-films.

In-Between meetings

There will be three to four one-hour meetings organized that are dedicated to ‘housekeeping’ issues. In these In-Between meetings wants and needs can be put on the table, practical questions can be discussed and/or unclarities in briefs for intensives can be taken up. We ask each group to appoint a Student Representative. This representative can collect agenda points for the In-Between from the group of peers. If wanted, the student representative can share these points with their peers or anonymously.

Modes of Examination

The learning outcomes will be examined through

an individually completed audiovisual work
public screenings of the completed audiovisual work
oral presentations at seminars and (public) dissemination-moments
written assignments.

Learning Outcomes

These are the criteria by which you will be examined at the end of this course. The student must demonstrate that they have satisfied all of the following. On successful completion of the course, the student should be able:

Knowledge and understanding

identify areas of interest for their own professional film practice
analyze different methods for dissemination and communication of audiovisual works in public contexts
account for the production-steps required to organize different types of public screenings of audiovisual works

Competence and skills

present a completed independent audiovisual work in the subject of film in public contexts
plan, organize and produce opportunities for public dissemination and communication of audiovisual works, individually and in groups
write a development plan for a filmic practice that is located in specific professional fields

Judgment and approach

critically reflect on their own role and position as filmmakers in different professional contexts and environments
critically reflect on their own artistic research work in the subject of film in relation to societal, social and political aspects
critically reflect on their own choices regarding the dissemination, publication and screening of an independent audiovisual work in public and professional contexts with a focus on intention, finished expression and how their filmic work meet different audiences

Assessment

To pass this course the student must adequately demonstrate that they have achieved the identified learning outcomes, and fulfilled requirements to submit the requested course materials by the stated deadlines.

In case of absence from any of the teaching moments in this course, examination through substitute assignments will be arranged. These substitute assignments are equivalent to the original assignments, but might differ in form (written, oral, or filmic), they meet the same course’s learning objectives as the original assignments.

Re-examinations

Students will be informed of their course grade within 15 days of the end of the course. Students who did not sit the examination or who fail will be offered the following opportunities for re-examination:

Third Friday in March.
Third Friday in August.
Second Friday in December.

In addition to the above dates, the course director may offer more opportunities for re-examination.

Regulations for examinations

If a student, who has been failed twice on the same course component being examined, requests a change of examiner before the next examination session, a request of this kind should be sent in writing to the department responsible for the course, and granted, unless there are special reasons to the contrary (Chapter 6, Section 22, Higher Education Ordinance).

If a student has received a recommendation from the University of Gothenburg regarding study support for students with disabilities, the examiner may decide, in the case where this is compatible with the learning outcomes for the course, and provided no unreasonable resources are required, to give the student an adjusted examination or an alternative form of examination.

In the case where a course has been discontinued or has undergone major changes, the student should normally be guaranteed access to at least three examination sessions (including the regular examination session) during a period of at least one year, but at the most two years after the course has been discontinued/changed.

Course Development Survey

The course will be evaluated orally at its conclusion and also in writing and anonymously via a course development survey, where you will have the opportunity to provide your views on the course. After this, the instructor will write a course report containing a summary of the various evaluations, including key observations made by the students and the instructor’s summary, analysis and action plan for the course. The compiled course development survey and course report will be published in GUL no later than eight weeks after the course ends.

Equal Opportunity, Equal Treatment

Equal treatment means that harassment and discrimination against students or employees on the basis of gender, gender identity or expression, ethnicity, religion or other belief, disability, sexual orientation, or age may not occur at the university. It is also forbidden to commit reprisals against someone who has lodged a complaint, i.e. to get revenge on someone who files a report.
