”Indeed, no objects on the work bench can save the world, and only a few can even make a most modest contribution to even a minor betterment. But an inquiry with the fresh eyes, sharp tools, and the dirty hands of the workshop can at least push the handy to take practical steps in repairing what is obviously broken” (von Busch, 2022, xxii).
Information from your teacher
Dear all,
Welcome to the course Critical Design Perspectives (EMD21A)! We will have our course kick-off on Monday 16 January (09.30-11.30) in room 305. We continue the kick-off in the afternoon at Frihamnen, the place where the design project will take place, an area in transition. The course is set up in cooperation with Prototyping Gothenburg, a collaborative project led by the Gothenburg City Triennial in collaboration with Gothenburg & Co.
Please spend some time reading about Prototyping Gothenburg and looking around Canvas before our first meeting. You can check the preliminary schedule in TimeEdit with the code EMD21A, but please be aware that some changes will be made. During the course, we will use the Canvas calendar as our main schedule interface, which will contain the most up-to-date information.
The core design method to be explored in this course is prototyping. The practical design project focuses on creating a mobile outdoor kitchen, with the goal to contribute to sustainable city development. You will probe ideas of the kitchen's functions and programming, and investigate who the potential users are. Finally, you will concretize your ideas and build the kitchen under the leadership of Egnahemsfabriken.
Another important learning goal is to train skills in critical reflection. This reflection will partly take place in Design Studies, a course module that is shared with the other design master programs. You will also train skills in academic writing, which in this case concerns project reporting.
The course will mainly be taking place in Frihamnen, but you will start with a set of workshop activities on-site at HDK-Valand. Make sure you are prepared for hands-on work and outdoor activities!
You will get further information about the project and individual work during our course kick-off. We look forward to meeting you all!
