Mapping and Archiving Artistic Practices
Time Edit: Here
Aim of the course
Welcome to the course, KHMF10 V23. This course is the second semester for MA1 Craft. The course leader is Yuka Oyama. MA Program Manager is Klara Brynge. We will also welcome our new colleague, Åsa Norman for Textile Art. Magnus Haglund will also join as a teacher for theory and writing. The duration of the course is 12.January – 19.April 2023.
The main objective of this course, KHMF10 V23 is for you to develop your artistic practices in depths. You will complete min. one to max. three finished artworks by the end of this course. You will focus on your studio work so that you will gain in-depth insight into your own working methods, artistic contextualization and expressions. You will follow your project plan based on your ‘Road Map’ written in December 2022. This plan will be discussed and re-adjusted together with consultations of your supervisors. The second objective of this course is to expand your knowledge in using text in tandem with your artworks—artistically. Here, we will explore the role of archive, archiving, map, and mapping that serves as a means of communicating key facts, histories, processes, and backgrounds of your artworks. Through demonstrations and practicing how to work with archives and maps as artistic practices, you will be encouraged to investigate how you as an artist think about and engage with archiving, archives, mapping, and maps.
Building a trusted collaborative working environment lies as one of the main emphasis of this course, which will lead to build solid basis for a group exhibition in the next course after April 2023. Therefore, your attendance and participation in the course will be taken into account to complete this course.

How is this course designed?
A focused individual studio exploration is the main purpose of this course. You will attain in-depths knowledge of your artistic practice and clearer artistic inquiries through working intensively in the studio. Supervisors (Karin, Åsa, and Yuka) will guide you through individual and group tutorials. A two-day group tutorial will also be undertaken during this course, where you will have a one-hour thorough discussion about your studio progress among MA1 students. Additionally, one group seminar with Dr. Emelie Röndahl will be hosted to have extensive discussions on the following topic: ‘Time’. You will also be introduced to how other artists, who work at HDK develop their artistic inquiries into practices and how they work with archives: Karin Blomgren, Åsa Norman, Birgitta Nordström, and Dr. Tintin Wulia.
As a means of expanding your knowledge of how synthesis of text, images, (research) materials, etc. can increase articulation of your artistic intent, Yuka and Magnus will introduce examples of artists who employ archives, archiving, maps, mapping, and making archive-like artist books as their creative methods.
Four Block Seminars
After a brief course introduction, a seminar by Emelie on 'Time’ will be hosted. The first block seminar (week 4) will start with a lecture by Magnus on historical development of archive art and examples of artists who work with artistic archives, maps, and archive-map books. You will then attend a field trip into the Haselblad Foundation archive. There will be an online lecture by Larissa Fassler (http://www.larissafassler.com/startside.html). There will be a group walk in Gothenburg lead by Magnus. He will then give the first five-day-assignment.
The second block seminar (week 5) starts with an assessment of the first assignment by Magnus. Yuka will give a lecture on ‘Archive Art’, where she will introduce a wide range of archive artists / artworks. Afterwards, the class will visit the World Culture Archive. The second assignment will be given. This assignment will be assessed in week 17.
The third block (week 10) will entail intensive group tutorials on the studio practices. We will split the class into two groups. Each student will receive a one-hour slot. You will also be introduced how other artists have developed their artistic practices and how they work with archive, archiving, map, and mapping. We will host four one-hour lectures by Karin Blomgren, Åsa Norman, Birgitta Nordström, and Dr. Tintin Wulia.
In the fourth block (week 14) you will start working intensively with your partner and make an archive / map for her/him/them. You will meet your partner and discuss by 3. April. Visit studio, show images, texts, materials, thoughts and more.
