The course is given in the fifth semester of the physical geography/climatology focused undergraduate programme in Earth Sciences and in the first semester of the master's programme in Geography.

Course content
The course deals with the theoretical and practical aspects of:
- Effects of urban housing on radiation balance, energy fluxes, temperature, humidity and wind conditions of near surface layers
- Energy balance of humans in relation to the outdoor environment, thermal comfort indices and the relationship between humans, climate and behavior
- Incorporation of climate knowledge into urban planning and design
The course comprises of lectures, guest lectures, exercises, field measurements, a field trip, seminars and a literature assignment.
In many of the assignments, you will work with Excel, QGIS and its plugin UMEP. We therefore strongly encourage you to do the Introduction to Excel exercise found in Getting started with Excel, QGIS and UMEP.
The schedule is preliminary up to two weeks before the start of the course.
