Welcome to GV4000 Earth Science Excursion 1, 15 credits, Autumn 2023

Dear students,

Welcome to the Canvas pages of the GV4000 2023 Non-Nordic excursion course. In contrast to the years before the course is now located in octiles 2 and 3 instead of 1 and 2. This has some implications for the structure of the course. As we will travel to and through Italy and won’t miss the spectacular geology of the Western Alps we have to start with the excursion part of the course. The reason for that is that the weather conditions from mid-October on in the Western Alps are very unstable and in case of bad weather there can be flooding, snowfall or even landslides in late October. Certainly, fast changing weather conditions are always possible in Alpine terrain, but autumn (as well as spring) in the Western Alps can be extremely wet. Hence, we would like to leave this area before mid-October for the (hopefully) sunny island of Elba. However, in order to accomplish our Alpine teaching program and to see the bare minimum of the spectacular outcrops we will start on Monday, 2nd of October with the arrival at Milano airport. I have not organized the cars that we will pick up there, but I will try arrange a pick up in the early evening or late afternoon, so that there is enough time for everybody to arrive. The end of the excursion will be on the 20th of October in Naples, which will be the day of departure with no other program on that day. I have uploaded the schedule in the files section of this Canvas page.

As the time between beginning of semester (28th of August) and the beginning of the excursion is very short I will arrange a meeting early in octile for all who are interested in a participation, so stay tuned if you want to join the excursion. It is very important for all of us that you, who want to join, register on the course and check this website regularly, as I will have to book cars and accommodations for which I need to know how many persons we are. October is still a very busy month on Elba and in the Bay of Naples region (Capri, Ischia, Amalfi coast, Pompeji etc.) and there are many countries that have autumn holidays in October. Hence, late booking or surplus rooms might not be available.

Once back in Gothenburg we will have another octile where we can work with and discuss about what we have seen in Italy. The preliminary idea is that we develop projects for group work on the trip and perform the group work once we are back home. Therefore, I have booked rooms in Natrium in November.

If you have questions please do not hesitate to write me an email or communicate via this page (e.g., in the announcements section).

Looking forward to seeing you in September

Matthias
