MAFI12 - Critical Reflection (7,5 hp)

MAFI 12 (reflective Course) is entwined with MAFI11 (Film Practice). The course aims to develop (1) the ability to reflect on one’s own and others' filmic expressions when it comes to ethics, aesthetics, context and themes. The course stimulates critically (re)thinking social and temporal issues in and trough the film practice, by testing and trying as well as by discussing different filmic ideas and theories. The course aims to develop the ability to identify and review the importance of how the surrounding societies relate to the students own filmic work as well as the ability to elaborate on one’s own inquiry as a basis for film work are developed.

The course’s educational bases and learning activities are:

Intensives

The MAFI11 Practical Course and the MAFI12  Reflection Course are interwoven. The course will be implemented in the form of several intensive periods of study (So called 'Intensives') which usually consist of lectures, seminars, individual and group-based project work, peer feedback, written and audiovisual exercises and individual tutoring. An intensive period usually lasts one week and is preceded by several weeks of self- study. Detailed instructions (briefs) for the intensive period are handed out before the self-study weeks.

MA Forum

As a part of the MAFI12 H21 Reflection Course MA Forum sessions will be organised. The MA Forum runs over two semesters, fall MA1, spring MA1. Each semester will have four sessions in total.

General information

The MA Forum is where Master students meet across programs (Film, Literary Composition and Photography) and are introduced to foundational concepts and theories that are valuable for developing a critical, artistic practice within an artistic research environment.

According to European law each master should be preparatory for a PhD, which means: you should have the knowledge that prepares you for PhD-studies (the third and highest cycle in the educational system). Artistic research as a discipline has widened the possibilities for artists, filmmakers, writers, musicians, and designers to do research in and through their artistic practice. Artistic research by default departs from within an art practice, thinking through text, images and sounds, using the art practice as a conceptual framework, a methodological vehicle as well as a means of dissemination. But what does that entail precisely? What does such a research process look like? And what knowledge resides in one's artistic practice? The MA Forum seminar series is dedicated to those, and other questions revolving around the process of artistic research.

Learning Activities

Seminar & Discussions: MA Forum runs over two semesters, and consists of eight MA Forum Sessions. Each MA Forum Session spans two hours. By means of invited guests who will deliver presentations on their respective research endeavors, students will be exposed to diverse facets within the realm of artistic research. These presentations will invariably be accompanied by group discussions among the students, fostering a comprehensive exploration of the topics at hand.

Preparation:

For each MA Forum we ask students to do preparatory work;  Students can i.e. be asked to read articles, watch clips or think about a proposed question. The workload for this preparatory work will be around three hours for each MA Forum session. Students receive a brief with all information about each MA Forum session ± two weeks in advance of the MA Forum date. In this brief one will find all information about the preparation we ask one to do for the session.

Reflection:

After each MA Forum students are asked to write a short reflection, in which one is always asked to connect the theoretical propositions posed during the MA Forum back to one's own practice and inquiry-led project. The reflections are the examinable elements of the MA Forum Seminars.

MA Forum responsibles for Fall 2023  - Mirka Duijn (mirka.duijn@gu.se), Niclas Östlund (niclas.östlund@gu.se), Balsam Karam (balsam.karam@gu.se)
