Information from your teacher

Dear students,

Welcome to Design Practice in a Corporate Context (EMD12A)! We will have our course kick-off on Monday 6 November at 9:00 in room 501 Målarsalen.

Please spend some time looking around Canvas before our first meeting. You can check the schedule in TimeEdit with the code EMD12A, but please be aware that the Canvas calendar contains the most up-to-date information and thus will be the one used as our main schedule interface.

This course is as an introduction to the corporate context, with a particular focus on the role of the designer in this setting. It is meant to bring you to an encounter with the corporation as an object for cultural inquiry and designerly experimentation. We will explore the realities of corporations and their role in contemporary social and economic life, and probe into how design can be used to intervene and effect change in these contexts. This course draws on research from a wide range of fields beyond design (including organization studies, innovation management, science and technology studies, philosophy). Some of these may take you out of your comfort zone, so we invite you to stay open-minded and approach this course with intellectual curiosity and imagination.

The course will consist of a combination of seminars, lectures/talks, method labs, study visits, tutoring/critique sessions, and a 2-day design thinking sprint. You will work in groups on a design project set up in collaboration with Volvo Group.

Further information about project and individual work will be provided during our course kick-off.

We look forward to seeing you!

Ulises, Milly, Louise & Helena H.
