Course syllabus
Learning from Las Vegas, Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown, 1972
It can seem like the world is growing – more networks, connections, information. The way we make sense of it all relies on our ability to decipher and process information. One way to grasp the flows, streams of entangled and rhizomatic information is to make it tangible and visible.
We need to learn how to pull relevant bits out of the streams and place them where we can see them, dissect them and talk about them. Practice how to visualise complexity. The aim of the course is to enhance your ability to analyse and to communicate the circumstances and potentialities in society that are characterised by obscurity, uncertainty and complexity.
You will develop knowledge around complicated and complex situations. You will work with visualising, materialising, situating and essaying. You will research through making and take on the thematic of the course by doing.
Furthermore the course is concerned with exploring the role of design practices in processes of transformation.
Within the course your design work will derive from the contexts, sites, situations and issues that you encounter in the town of Mariestad. You will develop individual or collaborative work that dissect and discuss the conditions that you zoom in on. You will work across scales bridging 1:1 scale explorations with larger scales and complexities. Mariestad is our shared context and the connection between each of your design projects. The course asks questions about designs role within urbanism and placemaking processes. Together you will explore this role by engaging with and connecting to issues you identify and se potentials in for design practice to contribute to. You will do this by visualising, materialising, situating, speculating and acting.
