Course Summary:

Welcome to KHMK10 H23 Method and Context in Craft Practices!

This course (22 hp) is an introduction to the Master’s Programme in Crafts – Ceramic Art, Jewellery Art and Textile Art. The course activities will start on Monday, 28. August 2023 and end on Tuesday, 9. January 2024.

The main focus of this course is to introduce basic tools and concepts of inquiry-based craft practices, which aid to design and conduct independent artistic studio practices throughout the master study. There are two mandatory sub-courses that run parallel during this course:

  1. Introduction to Practice-Based Artistic Research (inquiry-based artistic practice) 12,5 hp
  2. Introduction to Writing in Artistic Practice (theory) 10 hp

Introduction to Practice-Based Artistic Research aims to support you expand your previous practice/material knowledge and discover areas of your interests by guiding you to learn various artistic methods, methodology, and structures to undertake experiments in artistic studio work. Introduction to Writing in Artistic Practice will start with introducing you to use the GU library, look for information you will need in multifarious media. Through two writing seminars, you will learn definitions and examples of inquiry based artistic practices, how to analyze, reflect upon results of your studio explorations. You will also learn how to contextualize and deepen your artistic interests through writing. You will also attend three lectures that introduce current debates and discourses that are embedded in the contemporary crafts. Please make sure to read several texts before attending seminars and lectures.

Note: On Fridays, you will also attend your elective course.

Lecturers
The course leader is Prof. Yuka Oyama. Yuka will lead the Introduction to Practice-Based Artistic Research. The following guest lecturers will also join the course: Mielle Harvey (jewellery artist based in USA), Dr. Petra Ahde-Deal (jewellery artist, researcher based in Copenhagen), Gustav Thane (PhD candidate in Craft, blacksmithing), Dr. Theodor Harper Davis (Senior Lecturer Ceramic Art).

Linda Sundberg (GU librarian) will start  Introduction to Writing in Artistic Practice with a tour in the GU library. Writing seminars will be taught by Ben Lignel (ceramic artist, writer, curator, cook). Three lectures will be given by Prof. Jessica Hemmings (writer, researcher, curator).
Your individual tutorial supervisors throughout the semester are Yuka Oyama (Jewellery Art), Åsa Norman (Textile Art), and Dr. Theodor Harper Davis (Ceramic Art).

The First Week: 28.Aug. - 1.Sep.

In the first week, you will get to know your fellow students and faculty members, go on studio tours, find your studio space, register to necessarily IT systems to start your education at HDK-Valand. There will also be an introduction meeting for MA program, subject-specific specialization's get-to-know activities, and introduction for this course, KHMF10 - Method and Context for Craft Practices.

Welcome Craft students, MA1 Yuka Oyama (Professor, Jewellery Art) will meet you and give you a tour around the school. Meeting point: main entrance.

This day is dedicated for activities within subject-specific fields: BA-students, MA-students and staff members. Keep an eye on emails that will be sent to you by your department.

At 10.30, both BA and MA students, will meet to present themselves and get to know each other. We will ask everyone to share a five-minute presentation of their work. You can use the same slides you put together for the Friday presentation.

Prepare a five-minute presentation of your work using power-point, a PDF document, or something equivalent.

Åsa Norman (asa.dybwad.norman@gu.se) will bring a computer to show the presentations from. Please your presentation by Thursday, 1. September noon the latest.

Show max.15 pictures based on the following four questions:

  • What are your geographical and artistic background(s)?
  • What have you been working on (artistic practices) until now?
  • What work do you hope to develop at HDK during your master studies?
  • Show one picture of a work of art that you have been influenced by.
