Course syllabus
Welcome to the course "Variationist sociolinguistics", 7.5 hec.
The course deals with different types of language variation from a sociolinguistic perspective. Taking its starting-point in the work of William Labov and other early pioneers, it gives a survey of important theories, materials and methods within this discipline, focusing in particular on the effects of the variables class, sex and age. A discussion is also maintained of the importance of variationist studies for the development of empirical work within linguistics in general.
