ES2500/2540/2550 Degree Project Environmental Science (master) HT23

Welcome to the MSc thesis project Course in Environmental Sciences, Advanced level

The course start and introductory seminar will be in room 3220 GIS lab, Natrium, Dept. of Biological and Environmental Sciences, Campus Medicinareberget, Gothenburg

The purpose of the degree project is to connect you to research within an environmental science topic. Under supervision, you will carry out an independent project in which the knowledge you have gained during your education will be applied, deepened, and supplemented.

The presentation given during the course introduction to the examination course (28 August) can be found here

Course content, scope and setup

Most of the course refers to one's own work where you run individual research projects that will be presented both orally and in writing. However, you will receive guidance by participating in a series of seminars, by an individual supervisor (who is appointed on the recommendation of you), and via your examiner (appointed by us course leaders).

The intention with the course set-up is that every student who does an acceptable effort should be able to carry out their project over 20 (30 credits), 30 (45 credits), or 40 (60 credits) weeks. Lectures and seminars are intended to stimulate discussions of the set-up of your projects (theoretical as well as experimental) and data processing and also to prepare for the oral and written presentation of the thesis.

Important documents

Here you will find the course PM and the TimeEdit schedule as well Word version or see the Course overview below for dates & times. Please read and check TimeEdit schedules for updates.

Note that we will have a joint schedule for all working on their masters projects during the academic year 2022-2023 (30, 45, and 60 hecs)

We do not use any specific course literature, but see the PM and other material that is distributed via email and kept at Canvas under documents regarding the practicalities of your work. However, you will read and use a lot of literature specific to your project.

Preparation and selection of projects

Your main supervisor must be a teacher/researcher in environmental science at the University of Gothenburg or possibly at Chalmers. Most common is that your supervisor is among one of the teachers you had in your previous courses but could also be someone new to you. You can also have an contact person or assistant supervisor from a company or authority related to your planned degree project. It is recommended that you start contacting potential supervisor well in advance.

You can find information about the different research groups and projects, including contact information, at the department’s website Biological and Environmental Sciences, Marine Sciences, Earth Sciences, and Chemistry and Molecular Biology.

There is also a list of suggested projects in Environmental sciences that is updated regularly List of projects in Environmental Sciences (updated March 2023). Please, have a look at it, it may be the easiest way to find a good match between your interests and a suitable project and supervisor.  You can also look for inspiration in the MSc-thesis of previous year's students at GUPEA

Students are expected to have found a project and supervisor before the course begins!

Within 2 weeks after the course starts, you should submit your individual study plan (ISP).

When does the course start and how do I register?

The courses start regularly (August/September, November, and January) and you apply via antagning.se (Länkar till en externa sida.).  If you want to delay your start (starting at mid-term or in June) you should discuss this with the supervisor and us course leaders before the start of the course. Note, you apply for a 30, 45, or 60 hec project in Environmental sciences (overview of courses here), if you have your supervisor outside of Dept of Biological and Environmental Sciences we will sort this out when you are registered at the course.

Mandatory introduction to the course

All courses start with a common mandatory introduction on the first day of the course. You will get more information via mail once you are accepted to the course. If you are unable to attend you must contact us course leaders well in advance to make sure you do not miss important information.

Requirements to take the course

You will be registered by the course administration (ie, you do not register yourself via Ladok) when you have:

  • applied to the course and fulfill the entry requirements
  • an approved supervisor and preliminary project
  • attended the mandatory course introduction

Please contact the Office of Environmental Sciences Education (environmentalscience@bioenv.gu.se) if you have missed the last application round .

We start by meeting at Zoom or Campus

We will update with information here as soon as we know more.
