Kursöversikt
Welcome to the course GVG210 Mineralogy, 7.5 credits, Spring 2024
This course consists of different elements, book chapters, recorded lectures, question and answer (Q & A) sessions, mineral identification practicals and microscopy. In order to enable you to structure the course I will explain the different elements in the following:
The book chapters
For this as well as for the Petrology GVG 270 I have chosen a text book:
Cornelis Klein and Anthony Philpotts
Earth Materials 2nd Edition: Introduction to Mineralogy and Petrology 2nd Edition
ISBN-13: 978-1316608852
ISBN-10: 1316608859
It is available at the Cremona Book Store, which is located at the Chalmers campus at the entrance to the cafeteria. Here is the address:
Cremona Chalmers Bokhandel / Chalmers Konferens & Restauranger
Sven Hultins gata 2b | S - 412 58 Göteborg l +46 (0)31-772 39 45

I have created a schedule that should serve you as a guide through that course. In this schedule I list all the chapters from the text book that should be read on the respective day. The chapters include explanations, a summary of each chapter, review questions as well as suggestions for further reading. You should read through the chapter, the summary and check your understanding by answering the review questions. Reading the chapters is mandatory as the content of the book forms the basis for the understanding of mineralogical concepts.
The recorded lectures
In this course we try to provide you with a lot of practical work, which means hands-on-minerals and hands-on-microscopes. Both practicals are restricted regarding the number of participants that can be taught in one session. Hence, we will likely have several groups in each practical, which leaves less time for lecturing. However, some chapters of the book are a very broad and need some further explanations. Therefore, I have recorded several lectures that are linked to the book, but provide additional information about the topics in the book chapters. The recorded lectures are uploaded as video files in the “Files” section of this canvas page. They provide a bit more flexibility in the course and leave more time for the on-site practicals. Watching and listening to the recorded lectures is wise as their content might be relevant for the exam.
However, you can watch/listen to the recorded lectures whenever you want, but before the first on-site mineral identification practical you should have listened to the first 7 recorded lectures.
The on-site lectures
Before the mineral identification practicals and the microscopy practicals we will give you an introductory lecture.
The question and answer (Q + A) sessions
I have scheduled several Q + A sessions during this course. In these sessions you will have the chance to ask questions and to discuss various topics regarding the lectures and book chapters. I very much encourage you to use this opportunity to clarify open questions. Mineralogy is a very complex topic and the course is certainly very demanding. Thus, it is very likely that everyone has one or more questions regarding one or more topics. Therefore, it is helpful if you write down your questions during reading of the chapters or listening to the lectures and ask them in the Q + A sessions.
The mineral identification and microscopy practicals
Mineralogy is the science that investigates minerals, hence without investigating minerals in a hand specimen this course would be rather pointless!
- In Berglabbet and the microscopy room is limited space and the number of microscopes is also limited, hence, we need to schedule several dates for the mineral identification and microscopy practicals. We will try to do that at the introductory meeting. Dependent on how many students take this course I will try to reduce this number as much as possible.
Have fun
Matthias
