4. Practical information about studying in Brighton

i. Studying on the Gothenburg programme at Sussex post Brexit

There have been changes to travel from Sweden to the UK and for EU citizens studying in the UK since the UK left the European Union. It is not necessary for EU citizens to apply for a student visa to take this course as EU citizens can enter the UK on a standard visitor visa and study for up to six months, covering the length of our course. When travelling on an EU passport, you are given a standard visitor visa automatically when you arrive in the UK and do not need to apply for this in advance. Please note that you cannot be in the UK for more than six months after your arrival for the start of the course in September and that you will not be able to work while you are in the UK.

In August you will need to send in a copy of your main passport page to be uploaded to the University of Sussex's database; you will be sent instructions for this closer to the time.

When you arrive at the airport in the UK, you can use the e-gates to come through immigration as you do not need a stamp in your passport. It is very important to take a screen shot or photograph of your boarding pass; this will also need to be uploaded to the Sussex database as proof of your arrival date.

Anita will provide a letter confirming your acceptance on our course and you may be asked to show that at the airport.

You’ll find more information on this here

ii Insurance

Citizens of all EU states are entitled to some services of the British National Health Service. When in the UK you should always carry your European Health Insurance Card (’Utomlands / Europeiskt sjukförsäkringskort’).  If you do not have one, please check here for how to arrange that. (Go to ‘Utomlands’.)

The Swedish Embassy has some details and useful links regarding health care in England which can be found here

Students on the Gothenburg programme at Sussex are covered by the 'Student Ut' insurance scheme. Please note that if you choose to leave the UK during your time in Brighton, you would not be covered  by this scheme during that trip. For details of what the 'Student Ut' insurance covers, please check here

If you think you need additional cover beyond the insurance provided under this scheme, you could also check your home contents insurance policies (‘hemförsäkring’) as they often have built-in travel insurance which can usually be extended at an additional cost. Please consult your insurance company.

5. Student counselling and study support

Study counselling – Guidance and support

Study support for students with disabilities: If you are entitled to pedagogical support because of a disabilty, you should get in touch with the coordinators for study support as soon as you have been accepted for the course.

NOTE: If you are registered for the course but decide to drop out, you should contact the student office as soon as possible to do a so-called “early cancellation”. The easiest way to do this is to send an email to studentexpeditionen@sprak.gu.se in which you provide your name, personal number and the code for the course you are registered to.
Why should you do an “early cancellation”?
1) Students who are registered for the course without taking any credits affect our statistics in a negative way. This affects the Department’s budget and in turn our ability to offer quality teaching and education.
2) It is also beneficial to you since, if you inform the student office that you will not take part in the course as planned this term, you will have the right to apply for the course again next time it is offered.
