Course syllabus

Welcome to the Xhosa and Zulu, introductory course!

Xhosa Zulu books.jpg

The aim of this course is to get a basic understanding of Xhosa/Zulu, in terms of grammar knowledge, reading and listening skills. You will learn basic vocabulary and conversation phrases. Moreover, you will get insights into the role of these languages in South African society.

Xhosa and Zulu, written isiXhosa and isiZulu in the languages themselves, are very closely related varieties of the Nguni subgroup of Bantu languages. They are therefore distant family of Swahili, another Bantu language that we teach here at the University of Gothenburg.

Since Xhosa and Zulu are so closely related, we have decided to teach them together.

Everything you need to know about the set-up and structure of the course can be found in the course guide.

NB: make sure you order the book(s) mentioned in the reading list on time! These need to be ordered from South Africa, which has not been a problem in the past. The first few chapters will be available as pdf on the course pages, in case you don't receive the book on time. Contact Graham Bingham at African Voices directly to order your copy (copies). graham.bingham@gmail.com

The books are also physically available at the library in Gothenburg.
