SO1211, Somali Text Reading and Translation 1

This course focuses on three competences: reading and understanding Somali texts; elaborate translation into English, Swedish, Danish, or Norwegian; analysis of difficulties in the translation process. The vocabulary is expanded to about 3000 words, phrases and constructions through reading of appr. 100 pages of original Somali texts.

Term: Autumn 2024, starts 2 September, ends 18 January
Credits: 7.5 ects
Study Pace: 10 working hours/week
Teacher: Morgan Nilsson
Schedule: Online lessons on most Tuesdays from 17.00 to 18.45 CET. Notice that the lessons are obligatory.
If Tuesday afternoons are impossible, please let me know, and we'll try to find an alternative.

Learning outcomes

  • master a vocabulary of about 3000 words;
  • give an account of different translation strategies and how they can be applied to his/her own translations;
  • using lexical aids, read simple authentic texts in genres such as news, technical texts and fiction;
  • independently translate simple texts from Somali into a Scandinavian language or English and use relevant translation strategies and aids;
  • relate critically to different strategies in practical translation;
  • relate critically to his/her own translations and independently identify, analyse and solve translation problems.

 

Exam and grading

This course is not divided into smaller parts. It ends with a final written exam.

You need to find a place and a person who is willing to administer you exam, e.g. a public institution such as a school, a library or your workplace.

Two different grades are available: a result of 85 % is required for G (Good) and 95 % is required for VG (Very Good).
