SO1212, Somali Text Reading and Translation 2

This course further develops the reading skills in Somali, as well as the practical translation skills from Somali into a Scandinavian language or English through the study of 300 pages of original texts, partly provided with comments, glossaries and sound recordings. The vocabulary is thereby increased to at least 4000 words and phrases. Throughout the course, special attention is also paid to common types of translation problems and strategies, mainly through analysis and discussion of existing translations.

Lessons: on Zoom most Tuesdays from 18.00 to 20.00 CET.

 

 

Learning outcomes

  • master a vocabulary of about 4000 words;
  • give an account of translation problems and strategies that are especially typical for translations from Somali;
  • understand authentic Somali texts of medium difficulty in genres such as news, facts and fiction;
  • translate such texts into Swedish, Danish, Norwegian or English, using relevant aids and strategies;
  • relate critically to different translation strategies;
  • relate critically to one's own translations and independently identify, analyse and solve encountered difficulties.

 

Exam and grading

This course is not divided into smaller parts. It ends with a final written exam.

You need to find a place and a person who is willing to administer you exam, e.g. a public institution such as a school, a library or your workplace.

Two different grades are available: a result of 85 % is required for G (Good) and 95 % is required for VG (Very Good).
